Lets start from the beginning....

List EVERY piece of hardware being used and its model and connection type.....

Hint PCI-e is not supported under win98se I do believe.

After that:
Under XP, see what model number the REALTEK is identified as.

Then in Win98SE:
Start > Run > MSINFO32 > Hardware Resources > IRQs (I am not wanting IRQ CONFLICTS section) ... You can select all and post that list here.

When you goto boot the computer, right before the OS takes over should be an IRQ assignment chart, hit [Pause / Break] key to see them, post that info also.

Even tho the south bridge chip is VIA the actual sound chip is Realtek. VIA AC97 drivers for the VT8233 will install but you won't get any sound. MS incorrectly assumes that the sound chip is VIA because it "sees" the VIA audio controller in the south bridge. Common problem.

Realtek drivers here: http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherbo ... NFO=Driver. Uninstall any sound drivers before installing these. Chris.

This is the one on the abit site I already tried.

Realtek a393 (also on the CD that came with the ip95 motherboard) causes this error

"msgserv32: Pgm performed illegal op: gpf in module commctrl.dll "

error & can't continue
(no access to safe mode or protected mode... must re-install image)

I am re d/l ing it to see if it is newer, but I doubt it.

I have no hardware other than the mbd & hard drive/monitor hooked up.

There appear to be Wdm, Win95, & WinNT4 drivers on a393. If I follow the readme .txt, I get the above error.
I have removed all the multi-media/audio drivers via safe mode before installing.

What might be causing this msgserv32 ...commctrl.dll error?

There is rather a long post here but there is some good info: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/i ... 86587.html

One thing we seem to forget with Win 98 is system RAM. Anything over 512Mb you have to tweak Windows.

"If you have more than 512mb of ram in 98se - do add to theMaxFileCache setting System.ini file
thusly:
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=524288"

There is also mention of an old friend from VIA's Win 98/ ME days, George Breese's Patch: http://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/#PCI You may need that to run Win 98 on this newer board because all the onboard devices use way more IRQ's than Win 98SE can handle. Chris.

Thanks for all the possibilities.
The answer is that "MS incorrectly assumes that the sound chip is VIA".
After trying many drivers, I went to the Abit mobo CD (a393) & went to
(cd):\Drivers\Audio\Realtek\Win95\
& right-clicked Valcx95.inf: install

It automatically found the correct 'pieces' & worked.

files work in se:
\a393 (same ver on ip95 CD)\Win95\
\Win\ALCX95.INI
\Win\SWWTAC97.DAT
\Win\inf\other\Realtek Semiconductor Corp.VALCX95.INF
\Win\sys\ALCX95.DRV
\Win\sys\ALSWWT.DRV
\Win\sys\ALSWWT16.DLL
\Win\sys\MMDEVLDR.VXD
\Win\sys\SWWTAC97.DAT
\Win\sys\SWWTAC97.TON
\Win\sys\VALCX95.VXD

Thanks Again, Greg

hi,

You can go to this site "fix-all-dll-errors.com"
This will solve your dll file problem. as I registered few dls from this site as it is free...worked in my case. :)
