Powercolor Launches Fastest AGP Card - HD 4670

Postby honestjohn » Thu Jun 04, 2009 4:21 pm

Humm, maybe I should think about upgrading to AGP?

Powercolor HD 4670 AGP is launched ....

http://www.techpowerup.com/95987/PowerColor_launches_HD_4670_AGP_Passive_HD_4770_and_more_ATI_cards.html

Apparently there is still a huge number of AGP users that want to upgrade their graphics, yet are not willing to invest in a new system with PCI-Express support. PowerColor has listened to those requests and has now announced the PowerColor HD 4670 AGP PCS which is going to be the fastest card available for this dying interface.

The cornerstone specs are 1 GB GDDR3, 128 bit memory interface, 750 MHz core, 800 MHz memory.

HIS HD 4670 AGP

Postby honestjohn » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:30 am

And here's another from HIS this time. AGP refuses to go quietly into that good night ....

HIS Readying AGP HD 4670
ATI partners continue to show love to AGP users. HIS and PowerColor in particular, have been planning AGP graphics cards based on mid-range, current-generation Radeon HD 4000 series GPUs for a while now. It looks HIS is the first one to materialise them, with the HIS HD 4670 IceQ AGP. The company came up with another of its IceQ series designs, sporting the iconic IceQ cooler, and the blue PCB. The graphics card holds all the more importance to AGP platform users, as the Radeon HD 4670 packs 7.1 channel HDCP compliant audio passed over HDMI.

The card uses the AGP-8X interface. It draws auxiliary power from a 4-pin Molex connector. Under the hood is a Radeon HD 4670 GPU clocked at 750 MHz, with 1 GB of GDDR3 memory over a 128-bit interface, clocked at 873 MHz (1746 MHz DDR). Output is care of a DVI, D-Sub, and audio-routed HDMI. It is priced at US $129.99 on Amazon, with an optional rebate sending it down to $119.99.

I would imagine that AGP, like PCI, cards will be around for a long time. Some folks cannot afford to or simply don't see the need to upgrade to a newer platform for their PC. Chris.

Hey, you're preaching to the Choir. :D I've gotten into more fights with the "AGP is Dead " crowd than on any other subject, believe it or not. Defending people who simply asked the question "what AGP card should I upgrade to" as they usually get swarmed with not so nice people suggesting they burn their rig and start from scratch. I'm probably a little more sensitive to the subject because I didn't make the jump to PCI-E until about 2 years ago. So I know all the reasons why some are still using AGP and most of my reasons had nothing to do with money at all. That's the part most of the PCI-E groupies can't get past.

I get in more fights about "Floppy is DEAD" than any other piece of hardware. Since its use is maybe 2 minutes in x number of years, versus say AGP which would be daily.

LOL - I just ordered one of these on Saturday

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173207 - seemed a bargain @ £62 compared to what else is swilling round out there

My wifes 'work machine' has been sometimes refusing to fire up the screen. It usually works with a re-boot - but on Saturday it needed to be turned of and power down completely before re-starting  I've ordered her a new Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804 - gonna set up a dual boot with Windows 7 Professional (Currently XP Pro) - got a student offer for £30 - Got to be worth a go :D

Can I fit both these bits of kit without triggering the Windows police thinking I'm installing on a new machine ? LOL  I's been so long since I did stuff like that, I can't remember what the criteria are any more :ugeek:

With XP changing the video card was never a problem, and since the new drive will be a second boot drive, you will be fine.

Just a warning to anyone that gets one of these - they work fine in XP - but I struggled with the supplied drivers in Windows 7!

I needed to get an AGP version of the driver from Powercolors website before the card could be recognised!

Awesome update from 6600GT though LOL  3DMark03 score up by about 13000 points

Good luck :9:
