I woke up on Mars this morning

Postby randomizer » Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:39 am

Dust storm early this morning caused the Air Quality Index to skyrocket up to 1700 (200-300 is considered unhealthy and 500 is hazardous). It was quite a sight, however it wasn't much fun to walk in and my allergies didn't play nice. I had to walk in it to catch a bus, and I'm still coughing every now and then and blowing dust out of my nose. It's topsoil from inland picked up by 100kph winds.

Dear lord, that is actually what it looked like? My God. I thought the smoke and soot from the brush fires we get here was bad. You need to get a supply of those dust masks, bro. Take care of your self.

Yes, that's what it looked like. That's probably around 7-7:30am as the sun is higher (you can see the light near the top) but it's as red as it was where I live at 6am. Sydney is further up north which is where the storm was headed. Here's a shot from space with Google Earth overlays:

For reference, Sydney to Brisbane is about 575 miles or 926km on the coastal highways.

Well, environmentalists blamed climate change (it's not global warming now, remember, they don't know what's happening  ), but scientists said it's not. Dust storms are pretty common inland, this one is just enormous and made it to the coast which is rare. Here's Broken Hill in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95tmYmeHf84

That video is absolutely amazing.

The driver is an absolute nut tho. That cloud got dark fast, I would hate to see what hits them head on.

What was really neat is that when she turned the camera at the end, you could see an area about 1-2meters that was like it had no dust and you could see light from a good distance away along the ground.
