For me i seldom does, but then i've just did a update just a couple of min ago and choose to install sp3 and IE8

I have all my PC's set to notify me but not to install any new updates. Then at least once a week, I check all the Folding rigs and see what the updates are, using the Custom Install method. If I think it's important, I'll install it. Service Pack 3 for XP? Don't need it. Don't need any IE updates, either.

One of the reason i install sp3 cos i intend to try out the deployment tool which required sp3, btw i update win 7 IE7 to IE8 on my family rig and guess what?? Now when i access my webby, it look nicer or similar as when i use firefox to view, previously when i use IE 6 or 7 to view my site, it look some what awful, could be some bugs or script issue

I normally check to see whats an update for and then update if needed.

I used to have it set to notify and do a manual install, but I got lazy and have it set to automatic. I really don't have any issues resulting from that policy.
