Windows 7 and games......post your problems here

Wow. Tried to install this one yesterday, it is still one of my all time favorites! HAH! Win 7 does NOT like the Auto Run program that this game uses. Trying to install it gives an error "Type Lib Not Registered" Then Win 7 pops up with "The Program Might Not Have Installed Correctly" and offers to send an error report to MS. MS actually replies saying to install the latest Flash Player. Ummm, I already got that, D'Oh! But I installed it again just for shits and giggles. :?

Still no go. So, I browse to the CD and manually run Setup, which worked finally. But, then, right at the end of the install, I got another error pop up saying "The Splashscreen Has Stopped Working" And cancelling that error message window started a cascade of error windows going from mid-screen down to the bottom right corner and into infinity! And the only way to kill that was to go into Task Manager and kill Quake 4 which was running.

Now I'm gonna have to disable Auto Run for the DVD drive because I don't want to get this fraking error every time I want to play the game. I can't just leave the CD in the drive. *sigh*

At least, once I got it installed and dialed in, the game ran like new! Played for about 2 hours. Sure is a great game! Chris.

Run the install as Administrator, run in Computability mod if need be, as well. Chris~

I'll install it and see if I have the same issues, I doubt it. Also what is the UAC set at? Just put in on low

or better yet, try TwaekUAC as John and I do, works great in Vista, and John uses it in Win7 I think.

If I can run any game, you should be able too, bottom line.

Then again I have not tried Q4, when I get a moment Ill try my method or experiment with it, what have you, ok. ;)

Movie time now Never Back Down, ever heard of it?? We'll see? :D

HJ will know for sure what the issue is.

lol UAC ? in vista when i do a format of vista that is the very 1st thing i :butcher: kill so it doesnt ever bother me ever. and then i install all of my drivers and stuff. but i do 1 at a time and do a reboot between each driver install as well. and i do it in a certain order to and the last driver that gets installed is my gfx driver.

but this does want me to install win7 build 7600 more and more now since i do have it though... and yeah i like quake 4 and doom3 as well which are sitting in there box yet.

As far as I can tell it's not a UAC thing. And it's not an issue with running the game, it's the Installer! Game runs just fine without changing to XP Compatability Mode.

Here's the cascading errors:

And this is the "Splashscreen has stopped working" :

As long as I keep the CD in the drive it's fine. eject the CD, reinsert it and the errors pop up again. But now I disabled the Auto Run so I hope this little problem won't Pop Up again. Chris.

w00t w00t I knew i'd be something very simple, I have Win ask me each time what to do with every CD, DVD.

Another Method that would probably would do it is, Copy and Paste the Whole Dick on your HDD in a folder, and try
the install form there that way, I've done this in the past and always had good luck with it. :D

Anywho, you got it installed, and running correct? Chris.

It's a Cool A$$ game so is Doom3, ;)

Postby Mr. Chris » Mon Jul 20, 2009 3:25 am

Figured I had better make an "all in one" Topic here. It started with Quake 4 and now it's..............

MASS EFFECT*sigh* But, this is the D2D downloaded version and I seem to remember I had issues with it before. But that was with missing textures. Now it simply will not install. Period. Nada. Cancel's itself. *sigh* *sigh* Chris.

Chris~

Try installing it in Safe-mode. That way nothing will get in the way, sounds like an app is blocking it.

Or the Download is Corrupt.

Direct to Drive is something I have very little knowledge of. Wish I could help more.

It's Avast. LOL!! :D Ditch it and use MSE. See your thread "Had to give AntuVir the Boot!!" in OD.

MSE all the WAY Brother!! Yee Haaa!! Actually I have no idea if Avast has a thing to do with it.

I'm pretty sure you tried to install it with Avast turned off, already. Right, I thought so.

If that's even possible, he heee!! Just playing. Hmmm give my some time to think on it. ;)

Blue

:Bananas:

Mass Effect has DRM as well, I believe, however that should not stop you, or I wouldn't think so?

Great Link HJ!!

I'm gonna get it from Steam, it's only $20. If I'm going to take the time to download 7.19Gb again, I'd rather get it from another source that I trust. It could be that Direct 2 Drive has issues with Win 7, too.

Downloaded versions of games, AFAIK, don't have DRM like the original does. At least the "can only install so many copies" thing because, like this, what if you have to re-download it several times? It worked fine on Vista but we already know that doesn't mean it's gonna work on Win 7.

I'll take a look at Seven Forums later, thanks, John!

EDIT: went to Seven Forums, 2 things I noticed. The Author says "Beta build 7000" they should update to RC 7100 by now, eh? And he hasn't updated that list since 4/13/09? Nice find, tho. I prolly should join over there one of these days. But man, that's a whole lot of stuff to read! :o I could get stuck there for days! Chris.
