Handy Windows 7/Vista Utilities

Postby honestjohn » Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:50 pm

Didn't know what to call this thread as these utilities I just came across recently work in the other OS's as well.
Both of these one trick ponies came in handy this week for me while many other I tried failed.

First is CDCheck. I had a problem recently with my SonyHandyCam which records Video to DVD. Two DVDRW's I just made had CRC errors and I could not copy them. I always make backups of them because 99% of the time they're children's home video and the two I had a problem with were my kids end-of-year plays/awards. So I went out looking for something to save them, tried all the usual things and programs such as DVDShrink, ISOBuster, etc. Set Nero to ignore disc errors but nothing worked. Then I cam across CDCheck, worked like a charm. Didn't fix the data but it did correct the CRC errors to allow for backup. It's a trial version, but if you Register you get a free serial code. Used a throwaway email address I use to cut down on spam.

CDCheck 3.1

Checks your source drive and tells you which files are corrupted

CDCheck is utility for prevention, detection and recovery of damaged files with emphasis on error detection. CDCheck supports DVDs.

It supports CRC files and binary compare. CDCheck can be used on all files visible by your OS which means all files that you can see in Windows Explorer (CDs, floppy disks, disk drives, ZIP drives...).

CDCheck reporting features tell you exactly where the problems are. Files on CDs, zip drives, USB keys etc. can get damaged in a number of ways, so the program helps you determine whether your data is safe before it's too late.

The program also provides extremly fast binary compare for effectively checking that file transfers (burning, copying...) were accomplished successfully and alerts you of differences. Besides that CDCheck supports creation and checking of MD5, CRC-32, SHA... hashes in SFV, MD5 and CRC file formats.

This provides means to check backups for possible loss of information or verify file transfers where comparing is not possible (transfer over mail etc.). The program can be used with all local or removable media (CDs, DVDs, disk drives, floppy disks, ZIP drives, USB keys...) visible by the operating system (Windows Explorer) and also with audio CDs.

In addition CDCheck also gives detailed information (manufacturer, type, capacity...) about inserted CD or DVD media.

Here are some key features of "CDCheck":

· hash creation and checking
· file/directory checking
· binary file/directory compare
· file/directory recovery
· audio CD support
· data DVD support
· CD/DVD information with media ratings

DelinvFile

Postby honestjohn » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:01 pm

Now this next one is called DelinvFile. This one cost $22 but there is a fully functional trial which is great for a special occasion. After upgrading to Windows 7 RC 7100, two upgrade folders were created by the OS and they took up about 2 GBs of space. I attempted to delete the folders but couldn't delete one of them. The problem was that it had Securom in a sub-folder and two of those entries had filenames which normal windows delete functions could not handle. Error message of "could not file" would be displayed when attempted. Tried many utitlities which claimed it could take care of the problem and they all failed until I tired DelinvFile. Installed it and they were gone in seconds. May pay for this one if I need it again. Problems like these are far and few between however.

Windows allows the creation of file names and folder names that can not be deleted or renamed via Windows Explorer. This includes names with invalid characters and names that are too long.

The current version of DelinvFile (3.03) includes a function to scan for invalid names and too-long names.

Some windows functions allow creation of folder paths such that the combined path + filename lengths exceed the maximum permitted length. The current limit is 260 characters. In other words, windows can create names that are too long for the standard Windows Explorer to delete. The scan function also attempts to identify file and folder names with invalid characters which would make them un-removable via Windows Explorer.

List of Windows 7 Utitlities Verified at SevenForums. My Contribution was Desksave which restores your icon layout after they have been re-arranged due to a resolution change. My kids games do this all the time.
