Tips and suggestion

Postby cas » Sat Jul 11, 2009 12:34 am

Now that Phenom II is out, what is the trend now, is it to get Phenom II on a AM2+ mobo so that you can use the cheaper DDR2 ram... or just get the new AM3 mobo and get DDR3 ram which I notice always comes in either 3GB or 6GB.... which I think is more for I7 + X58 system.....

So what do you guys suggest??

I am thinking of getting basically everything new, except for graphic card or perhaps sound card (was thinking of just using the on-board), and intend installing my extra RMA-ed MSI 7900GTX on my old system as a backup.

Of course my monitor will remains, as it is still a LG 21.6" monitor.

My current system is pretty old but still usable.
AMD Athlon X2 4400+ @ 2.2Ghz (S939) + Abit KN8 Ultra
Patriot DDR CL3 2 x 1GB
Seagate ES 320GB
Hitachi 240GB
GeCube HD3870 X-Turbo III GDDR5 512MB
Soundblaster Audigy DE
Tagan 530W Easycon
CoolerMaster Centurion 534
Windows XP SP2

Asking on behalf for someone on another forum as i'm getting rust on AMD, haven't follow it trend lately :)

Since most reviews that I have read say the gains from using DDR3 compared to DDR2 are minimal, I went with an AM2+ board and DDR2 1066 RAM when I built my Phenom II 940 board. It runs really great, but the quad core wasn't being utilized, so I put my old KN9 SLI back to work as my main gaming rig, and I now run Folding @ Home on the Biostar/ Phenom II rig. Folding does use all 4 cores so I don't feel like I wasted money upgrading.

DDR3 is available in dual channel kits (like 2x 1Gb, 2x 2Gb) as well as triple channel for the Intel i7 boards. Chris.

2)stupid board died already *pfffftttt*
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2
