Microsoft Will Release Free Antivirus 'Soon'

Postby cas » Fri Jun 12, 2009 1:10 am

BOSTON, June 10 (Reuters) Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for PCs that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc.

A Microsoft spokesman said on Wednesday that the world's biggest software maker is now testing an early version of the product with its own employees and that it will "soon" make a trial version available via its website.

Shares of Symantec and McAfee, the top two makers of security software, tumbled in November after Microsoft disclosed plans to launch the service as investors worried that they will lose sales to the free product.

Microsoft has said that it will only include basic features for fighting viruses, which would likely make it comparable to the least-expensive products sold by Symantec and McAfee.

Their top selling products are security suites that come with features include encryption, firewalls, password protection, parental controls and data backup. (Reporting by Jim Finkle; Editing by Steve Orlofsky)

i use the defender some times. it is said 1 of the best and is free too.. i use avast anti virus. i really like it. its free for home use. but dont have the script scanning what ever it is..thats on the paid pro version.. but i had that to with a 5 year license. well it was high jacked with the keygen.. but i stopped using high jacked stuff years ago and after i bought xp and that was after wga started.. i dont want any problems or trojans what ever. so i only use what i buy or is free and said good now a days..

i dont use limewire or none of that stuff either. or download music none of it.. copy rights stuff etc etc etc..

but if this ms anti virus is good its a option for some that have no money i guess.. if its good and being free it sure beats buying say a norton and then have to pay more every year or it will not update any more.. i hate that junk. it sucks.. free updates for life or 5 years maybe.. now thats worth having..

see ya :D :9:

I was very happy with Avira Anti Vir until one of the Vista SP2 beta's borked it severely, I didn't want to wait for a fix so I went with Avast! and I'm very happy with it. Even the free version has all the scanners for e-mail and everything, like 7 scanners in all. It uses a lot more resources that Avira did but I'm happy with it.

Vista is secure as hell anyways, with Defender getting updates several times a week, then I have Avast!, Spy Bot S&D, and Ad Aware. The only thing any of them finds is tracking cookies (now I need to knock on wood after saying all that  ) We'll see how this new one from Windows is, but like others said, it's probably just a re-badged version of another existing A/V program anyways. Chris.
