It’s a testament to NecroVisioN that we mistakenly kept calling it Painkiller. After all, it’s being developed by the same guys who did Painkiller and follow-up expansion pack. It looks to be running on a slightly improved engine. It seems to be focused on the identical fast paced, no-nonsense FPS action that we loved about its close cousin. Therefore a demonstration behind closed doors at 505 Games / 1C’s Summer Showcase was a fantastic opportunity to see a game that’s all about gaming.
Due out 9th February 2009, the PC-only First Person Shooter takes players back to the First World War. You take control of Simon Bunker, a US solider who’s been on the front line for two years. On a recon mission, everything goes wrong and it becomes clear why the area between the trenches is called No-Man’s Land. Under the mud and filth of France is another war, one betweens Demons and Vampires and unsurprisingly it’s up to you to sort everything out. It’s unlikely to receive any Oscars, but it seems to be adding a loose narrative to a game that’s all about shooting monsters.
Choose your difficulty (out of four) and get killing. The only mod-con’s you have are a compass to point you vaguely in the right direction and the ability to sprint. There’s no deep narrative, no RPG elements and no cover system. This is a pure shoot-em-up; a hark back to the golden ages of gaming. You begin in the trenches, but end up in an underground world with supernatural weapons and powers.
We were shown two levels; the opening sequence where you’re in the trenches with authentic WWI weaponry and later, a run through the demon world to a large boss. The surface world is populated as you’d expect. Wooden trenches, burning fires, lightning in the sky. It is hell on earth, exactly what WWI was like. Aiming is done via Iron Sights and there’s a melee attack. It’s bog standard; point and click. It gets a bit more interesting when you unearth the true combat situation.
You get a rage mode that causes enemies to run away and in extreme cases, kill themselves. You can slow down time and run circles round your enemies easily ripping them to shreds. Your load out changes to reflect the environment. You can utilise Vampire weapons (there are 16 in total) and a melee claw for up-close-and-personal moments. It leads to extremely intense and satisfying combat. The game’s spread across 12 missions and they seem to be of substantial length.
The boss battle we were shown was you in control of a mech-like walker against a gigantic robotic scorpion. There was a slight déjà vu with Wild Wild West, but it quickly passed as we continually pelted the boss with rockets and minigun bullets. It’s a welcome return to simplistic, yet effective game design. It results in a sense of achievement that’s lacking from many games.
The game will feature up to 16 player Online / LAN multiplayer with 6 maps and three modes (deathmatch / team deathmatch and capture the artefact [flag]). The sad thing is because of the game’s unique engine many gamers will take a quick glance and move on. It seems to be coming along very well and we’re intrigued to see more.

Due out Feb 9? Hmmm. Well maybe a tad later, but if the demo's out, then the game should follow soon, I'd think?
