Trying to find out how much this watch is worth?

Postby Mr. Chris » Sat Jan 31, 2009 1:37 am

No, I'm not wanting to sell it I'm just curious as to how much it's worth.

It's a Wells Fargo 1852 presentation watch, a gold plated pocket watch my mom gave me for Christmas 25 or 30 years ago. Spent about an hour today trying to find any info on it at all, but can't seem to find anything. Maybe a jeweler could appraise it? I dunno. Thanks. Chris.

On the public TV something called the " Antiques Road Show", hook up with them. They travel all over the country. Sounds interesting.

I wish it was that old, John. It's just a replica, can't remember exactly when I got it but it had to be mid '80's. Wells Fargo Company made 1952 of these replicas, mine is #444. The back cover hinges differently than the original 1852 watch because these were actually replicas of a later, 1973 model. Like this:

I still haven't dug anything more up on it. Not even anyone selling one. Chris.

I was at a wwII reenactors event today and there was a watch dealer there. I ask him about your watch and he said any thing that was made by Wells Fargo is worth a lot of money no matter what it is. He said if it is before the civil war you maybe can get double for. He said that it might not be a gold plated watch, it could be solid gold watch.

I ended up stopping at a fancy watch store Sunday. They took a look, said it's a beautiful piece but not really worth that much. Gold filled, not solid (I figured that one already) perfect condition, but since it's only from 1982 (found an inscription inside the back cover with the year Mom gave it to me) maybe in another 30 years it will be worth more. Which is all fine, not getting rid of it anyways, was just curious. Thanks, everybody! Chris.
