Something I just noticed about Vista SP2........

Postby Mr. Chris » Sun Jan 18, 2009 4:46 pm

Or maybe SP1 had already "fixed" this issue and I didn't know? I just installed 4Gb of RAM yesterday, and lo and behold, Vista is reporting all 4Gb. I have been running SP2 since it came out as Beta, but I only had 2Gb RAM. But SP1 could have already fixed this little issue and I wouldn't have known. Oh, it is 32 bit Home Premium. Chris.

Chris, SP2 for Vista 32-bit really didn't change anything except for the way it displays how much RAM is available. It now displays how much RAM is physically available as opposed to how much is left over after Vista carves it slice out of it. This was done just to stop those from calling up tech support to say they have 4GB of RAM but only 3.4GB was showing up. This started with SP1 or a MS update prior to that, I don't recall which. If you use another utility, or DXDiag, it will show the actual amount of RAM available which is generally 3.2 GB - 3.5GB. So nothing has really changed. I believe the actual reason Microsoft gave for the change was so it would "confuse" less people.

Guys I just upgraded my memory in my laptop from 2gb to 4gb and yes it shows 4gb but still in system info it still shows: Installed Physical Memory: 4.0 - Total Physical Memory: 3.5. Like HJ said that SP1 made the change. Plus like HJ said it is still showing the true Total Physical memory 3.5 after all the hardware sucks up what it wants. It's there for the people that like my girlfriend say is those people should not own a computer. :o

You think that you are confused figure this one out. I have 8.00 gb of memory installed in this computer and this what it is telling me in System Information (64bit OS). :o :?

Installed Physical Memory: Not Available
Total Physical memory - 4.00 gb
Available Physical Memory - 6.05 gb

I just upgraded the memory on my new computer from 3gb to 9gb and this is what I have in system information (64bit OS) :?

Installed Physical Memory: Not Available
Total Physical memory - 1.00 gb
Available Physical Memory - 7.15 gb

On both computers it reads right everywhere else but here.
