AFAIK, the merc is Zaeed. So yes you have to do his loyalty mission. That's the one where he blows up the refinery to kill his old partner. And there are 2 choices there, you can save all the workers or find and help kill his old partner.

It seems the team members that are not loyal, on the last mission, will die. I lost Miranda and Legion. even tho Legion was loyal. Miranda changed on me after the fight with Jack.

oh at that time and play through i didnt have legion but i didnt loose anyone either and i did choice to catch his old partner though. and yeah i to lost Miranda loyalty as well because of jack. but i figurd i need jack though but i figured i wouldnt be able to get Miranda in bed so WTF!! lol

i do have zaeed right now but havent done his mission as of yet. and i am using the Cerberus armor right now for a change up.since i played a bit last night/this early morning before i went to bed around 5am

How could you not get Legion? He's the Geth that makes the last member of your Team? Or maybe you named him something different? I didn't think you could play thru to the end without him.

he was the last 1 i got so i made sure i had everything done before i went through the 4th relay that is why i didnt have him yet. but maybe you are talking about your 2nd play through perhaps?

No, I'm not even that far into my second playthru. IIRC, you find Legion on the derelict Reaper ship where the IFF device is. Then you bring him back to the Normandie and activate him.

well i save him for last in the 1st 1 before i went to the 4th relay.

I'm confused there seems to be more than one Mass Effect 1 & 2 threads, but Chris's here seems to be the oldest. I haven't

gotten very far, I was side tracked by the law, LOL!! I don't even recall where I left off really. Had other pressing matters going on.
