Support for boards with a Nvidia chipset

KN9 Ultra +Radeon 6850

Postby Gabor » Sat Mar 12, 2011 2:46 pm

Hey guys,
I was told, the 6850 would run on my KN9 Ultra, but when I plug it in and power on (both power connectors in use), it just beeps once long and a few times very very shortly, thats all.
Can anybody confirm that the 6850 runs on the KN9 Ultra?

Hi, Gabor and welcome! OK, first a short list of BIOS beep codes:

1 long - 1 short(Beep) DRAM ERROR
1 long - 2 short(Beep) Display card or monitor connected error
1 long - 3 short(Beep) Keyboard Error
1 long - 9 short(Beep) ROM Error

Yours could be #2, 3 or 4. First off, what kind of video card did you have installed before? Going from Nvidia to ATI means using a program like Driver Sweeper to remove all the old card's drivers. You may also want to clear CMOS after installing the card. I always double check that I didn't knock anything loose when removing/ installing a new card, like the power supply connectors to the motherboard, or even the RAM sticks.

That card should work fine, unless maybe you don't have the latest BIOS, but the KN9 never did have an issue with PCI E 2.0 or later cards. Oh, what is the wattage pf your power supply?

2)stupid board died already *pfffftttt*
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

Hey Mr. Chris, thanks for help!

I try to count the short beeps, when I return home after work.... From memory I would say its more than 3 but less than 9, but I will check later), I will also do a Clear CMOS then.
Before the new 6850 I had an ATI x1900XT which is installed again right now, to have the system running, I doubt that this is important, as I can not start the OS with the 6850 installed, I get a black screen and monitor going to standby because there is no video...

I replaced the old 400W Power supply with a new Antec 650W 80+ to avoid any problems.

With the old x1900 everything is running as usual, so I am sure there is no problem with cabling / RAM whatsoever. there are not other cards inserted.
My planned upgrade:
replace 1 HDD by SSD - done
replace Power supply - done
replace Graphics adapter - not yet done

the system now consists of
1x SSD,
2x HDD,
1X BD-ROM/DVD-burner (everything S-ATA)
8GB of RAM
ATI x1900XT (which should be replaced by the Sapphire Toxic 6850)
AMD Athlon 6000+
Planned OS is Win seven 64
Current OS is Win seven 64

best regards, Gabor

This is all you need to post the motherboard:
Motherboard(CPU and FAN)
PSU
1 stick of Ram
Videocard

I always start right there, that should get the post screen and a OS found. Any more parts than that and your complicating the issue...May need keyboard but that should be all.
