New ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo Motherboard OCing...

Support for boards with an Intel chipset

New ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo Motherboard OCing...

Postby MUff1N » Wed Aug 04, 2010 2:04 pm

Hi guys, while I've been away some changes have come about on my system.
The major change is that my Intel Badaxe II mobo finally called it quits on me after 3 years of OCing it. (1½ weeks out of warranty!) :|
So I replace it with the best DDR2 mobo I could find on Newegg (choices are getting slim now for this tech) being an ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo.

ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo Motherboard info: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=c ... templete=2
Bios OC settings windows:

The other was getting some new memory to go with it which is the G.SKILL- F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK (2x2Gbs)
& the new mobo is on their "Qualified Motherboards list" as compatible with it. :)
G.SKILL- F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK Info: http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=57

So I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with the ASUS AMI bios & knows about OCing on the ASUS P5Q Pro or other Intel ASUS boards.
I've got a start on it (3.34GHz OC) but there's settings that I'm not sure about as to when to start upping voltages such as the SB, NB, PLL & FSB.
Some don't require more juice until you start getting to the higher FSB frequencies & it would be nice to have some general knowledge in
that regard... ;) This P45 Chipset suppose to get really good FSB speeds (1600+) & it would be nice to know some of the settings to get it there.

But if know one here knows anything about the Intel P45/ICH10R chipsets I was nice to stop by & say hello just the same! :P
And for those that can help & do, thanks a lot for your time & effort, it is very much appreciated! :9:
I'm still using the Intel E6700 CPU but with the new G.Skill PC1066 memory.

I hope that board doesn't have the VIA onboard sound, because there are hundreds of complaints on the VIA Forums about the Asus boards. That G Skill is really nice stuff, same ones that I have in my Phenom II/ Biostar board. Looks like a nice rig! :9:

Even tho this Biostar has the AMI BIOS, I don't O/C, and it's not an Intel board, so I have no clue. AMI has always confused the heck out of me. Phoenix I can deal with, more straight forward as far as settings (or maybe I'm just more used to it)

And, it's always nice to get free stuff. ;)
1)Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3, Phenom II 970, 8Gb G Skill Sniper 1866, EVGA GTX470SC, 2x 500Gb SATA II RAID 0, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM
2) AX78, Phenom 9500, 2Gb OCZ PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX+, CDRW, XP Pro SP2
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

Yep Chris, it's got the VIA onboard sound alrighty! LOL :D
But I don't have any issues with it at all & it sounds great to me through my Boston Acoustics speakers!
I'm sure with the updated bios & drivers a lot of the issues that were there to begin with are now fixed
& I did take the time to make sure I had all of the latest bios & drivers installed! (I always do this first thing!) ;)

I'm learning my way around this bios & P45 chipset little by little & learning what all of these settings do & how they effect
your OC...The more I do & use the bios though the easier it's becoming thank God!
Once you know what the settings do it makes your choices in the settings much easier... :9:
At first it was totally confusing!!! (CPU Clock Skew?) LOL
I've yet to fine tune (final tweaks) this stuff in as the most difficult settings to dial in are the Clock Skews, CPU GTL References & Ai Transaction booster settings.

I'm waiting on the new stuff I won to get here so I can install them, then I'll start
doing some serious OCing & tweaking! But for right now I'm just doing easy clocks
no higher than 3.4GHz as the Zalman can only handle so much heat & the PSU I'm currently using
only has so much stable power. (The new 1200w 80 PLUS Gold PSU has an efficiency rating of over 90%! :o
Also, I have no doubt in my mind that this board would bet Way Better off having
the newer 45nm processors install as that's what everyone is posting the clocks on the net are using!
I know it's not by mistake or chance...
But the average for this board & a E8400 is 4GHz with 3.6 being a "easy" stock voltage OC!
It takes everything this 65nm E6700 CPU can do to be stable at 3.60GHz OCed hard!
So this is something I'm definitely going to do later when I have the funds! :P

New ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo Motherboard & More new Upgrade HW!!!

Postby MUff1N » Mon Aug 30, 2010 12:26 pm

A lot has happened since my last post, so I thought I'd bring you guys up to date with what's currently happening with my system & me.

Since I get the CoolerMaster news letter I was informed about a contest they were running this summer
called the Summer Fun Giant Giveaways contest.
I figured what the hell I'd enter as it costs nothing but a bit of my time filling out a survey. ;)
I had forgotten all about the contest & on July 27th received an email from CoolerMaster & not being their newsletter.
At first I though it was an impostor posing as them to get personal information from me, so I checked their website to verify what
was stated in the email as I've NEVER won anything in my life...that's until now!
Low & behold...there was my name in black & white stating I was one of the 10 Grand Prize Winners!!! :yahoo:
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/contest ... on=winners

Congratulation to the following winners!! Our representative will contact you via email soon. (the email I received)

Ten (10) Grand Prize Winners:

Ron P. from Scarborough, ON, Canada
William S. from Kenner, LA
James O. from Sahuarita, AZ
Sandra K. from Santa Fe, NM
Kevin L. from Fort Collins, CO
Don D. from Payson, AZ
Bryant P. from Milpitas, CA
Mark G. from Citrus Heights, CA
Joseph N. from Cudahy, WI

So what did I win?
1. Silent Pro Gold 80PLUS 800w modular PSU
2. V6GT 6 heatpipe 200w CPU cooler

I was already in the process of upgrading my system (as you already know with the new mobo & GSkill RAM)
so this new stuff was going in it as well because the newly won cooler & PSU were both better than what I was currently using.
I decided since I was putting this new stuff in, it would be a shame not to put a new E8400 in too heh.
So I did & the results are what you'd expect from this kind of a system's upgrade...
I've never had a system like this that OCed so effortlessly... :)
Now cruising along at 4.0GHz with a 2004MHz FSB! :9:
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1795590

So happens that the memory divider worked out to where the new RAM can run at 1002MHz
so now I got one good speedy gaming system with very low heat output.
The V6GT is so efficient at removing heat that even at full load at 4.0GHz it never gets hotter than 108F!
Most of the time it sits at 76F or less...

Its sure nice for a change to have things actually go my way for a change... :good:

Btw, the cooler was too tall to fit inside my case with the side panel closed, so I had to modify the side panel...pic below.

Cooler Master has been my favorite for cases and coolers for a long time (but the fans they use in their PSU suck) It's always nice to get free stuff. Congrats, dude! :9:

PS: Geil went out of business *sigh* best RAM I have ever bought. G Skill is awesome, I have the same RAM in my Biostar boards.
1)Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3, Phenom II 970, 8Gb G Skill Sniper 1866, EVGA GTX470SC, 2x 500Gb SATA II RAID 0, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM
2) AX78, Phenom 9500, 2Gb OCZ PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX+, CDRW, XP Pro SP2
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

Hey Chris, what do you mean about the PSU fans? Are they too loud (mine is silent) or do they not cool well enough (not the case with the Silent Pro Gold series)
or do the fans go out too fast? What? :|
As I said, I've NEVER won anything in my whole life until now & it couldn't have come at a better time!
I'm really late coming to the party on this tech, but better late than never! :P
It's not an i Core system, but for what it is, its very fast!!!

I've never use Geil RAM before so I don't know much about them, but I do know others that use G.Skill & swear by them!
That's the reason I choose them...that & they were at a decent price for their type, amount, speed & quality! ;)

The problem with the fans in the Cooler Master PSU's it that I have to lube them every 6 months. They are just cheap ass fans. I have ordered 2 Panasonic "Liquid Bearing" 120mm fans to replace them. Tired of having my rigs shut down due to overtemp PSU's. At least they just shut down, not blow my PC up. :o
