AN-M2HD Wont Post with Geforce 9800 GTX+ Installed

Postby Namnar » Sat May 22, 2010 1:21 am

My son got a new rig so I figured I'd scavenge his and put his PSU & Video card in my HTPC...

He had an AN8 Fatal1ty Mobo with the Geforce 9800 GTX+ and Antec Earth watts 650w psu... It has worked fine for quite some time.

My system is..

AN-M2HD
PSU - Antec Earth watts 650w
Geforce 9800 GTX+
Mem = 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 With Timings at 5-5-5-18
1 X 250 GB HD
1 x 750 GB HD
1 x DVD RW
1 x BluRay
Creative SB Xfi Extreme Gamer Sound Card
Wireless Blue tooth on USB & various memory sticks from time to time

Anyway, I got a new case to fit the PSU and vid card, slap it all together and no post. All works fine with the vid card removed and back on onboard graphics...
I've tried playing with the PCIE max payload & frequency to no avail... I dont see any other options in the bios....
Every thing spins up, including the video card fan & such and all other fans & HD but I just get no post beep & nothing on screen.

There was a compatibility issue with these boards and PCI-E 2.0 cards. You may need to update the BIOS, there was a fix that Abit put out. Also, I presume the aux power to the card is plugged in? And you changed the setting in BIOS to "Init Display First"? Can't remember what section it's in.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have the bios updated to 20, the latest, in order to incorporate the Phenom 9650 that's in there... I forgot to list the CPU in the specs...
I suspected that it might be a PCIE 2.0 problem but the 9800 GTX+ worked fine in the AN8 that it came out of so I figured I'd give it a shot...
I do have PCIE init first turned on.... No joy.....
I'm just about at wits end on this one.....
I hope the 9800 GTX+ draws a nice price on Ebay!!!

Could also be an issue with the contacts in the PCI-E slot, if it was never used. Compressed air, blow the dust out. Not sure what else to try. Sometimes this stuff just doesn't want to work. :(

Take a good look at the card, make sure nothing got damaged (like a capacitor) when it was swapped out. Take a pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the edge of the card.

Way ahead of you... I did the eraser as well as sprayed the PCIE slot out with contact cleaner... still no joy :-( It was actually, never used... and I've had the AN-M2HD for over 2 years now... perhaps it's really tarnished...

The 9800 GTX+ is completely enclosed by it's fan housing so theres no way to muck up a component during removal... One thing I did see while erasing the contacts is that one contact is slightly shorter than the rest, maybe by a hairs width... it doesnt look as if it were chipped off, just manufactured that way and I dont think theres enough missing to prevent it from making contact... I would have stuck it back in the computer it came out of just for a sanity check but I've already tore it down to sell off for parts.... I usually dont give up on this sort of thing but I feel this is a no winner at this point. I hope whoever buys it on ebay fares better than I... I dont need the negative feedback!!

Thanks for the help, btw!!

This is gonna sound stupid....

But, I thought the only card with a PCI-E 2.0 issue was the 8800 series and that required a fix to the card not the board.

And the Earthwatts 650 IMO is not enough to power everything listed - you did not list the previous specs of the sons rig, but I am venturing it was not as loaded as these specs....and USB items require power also.
