Hey chris thanks for dropping by, basically most router comes with 4 ports thus allow 4 comps to be connected to the net, so how does a switch goes about it cos it still require a modem and router to get it connected to the net. Does it mean the rest of the 3 comps i just plug into the switch?? As in does the switch have wans port other than lans ports? As you know most router ports comes with 5 ports, one of them is the wan (which is the cable from the modem to the router and the rest of the 4 ports are lans (allow comps lan to be connected)

The way our office is set up, we have the DSL modem which then connects to a router. One line goes to my friend's office, another to another office, one downstairs and one to my office. The one line from the router to me goes into the 8 port switch. Then I have my 6 PC's hooked to the switch. The switch is basically for the LAN. I'm not sure if you could hook it to the modem directly or not.

I suppose since you have a router already, you can hook 3 PC's to it, then hook up a 4 port switch and 4 more PC's.

Infact is for a company which is making queries and might engage me to network up their office pcs for them :(

I use a 4 port router and have a cable plugged into the 4th port that connects to a 4 port switch.
The most that I have ever had plugged in and running at one time was 6 but the network worked flawlessly.
It was pretty much just plug-and-play too.
Got lucky there!
