Anyone experienced with small notebook PCs?

Postby Graphite » Wed Jul 22, 2009 11:48 am

Hi my computer guru friends...

I'm sure someone here has some relevant experience with ultra compact type notebook thingies...

My wife thinks she needs one for working whilst travelling ;) She can type fast with all fingers so the keyboard is important! She currently has a 17" Dell at work - weighs a ton and sucks juice out of the battery like crazy!, We have at home a 15" HP - still too heavy and bulky - and runs power down quite fast.

Having seen these small 8" - 11" type things we are seeking advice from someone with experience of real world usage on the balance between size and practicality - oh yes and price ;)

Thanks, any advice appreciated...

I assume your meaning the Netbooks.

She needs to check the dimensions of the unit.

From what I have seen, it will prolley be about half the size of here current unit. Meaning the keyboard is also alot smaller. No DVD device.

The Netbook is going to be alot lighter. The computing power is going to be lower. Not sure how well the multitasking and use of MS Office 2007 will be.

Read this maybe it will help
Your typing style might be severely impacted by the way a keyboard is designed on one Netbook or another

Depending on where you live, some of the Cell phone companies offer these will a 2 year plan for like $100-200, so check on that also.

And this would solve the keyboard issue if she had the surface USBGeek

I used to own a acer aspire one 8.9" netbook with, tbh it suck, reason is using a 8G build in SSD, other than the storage is limited, can't install much or download much programme, basically just for surfing the net and when i got it, it came preinstall with linux linpus OS, once i install it with window it start to lagged though it has another version with window which run on hd, moreover the the fans is damn noisy, sometime have to resort to use a utility to stop the fan running

Imo if you're seriously looking for a netbook aka UMPC i would suggest either you get Lenovo S10, S12 or Asus eee PC 1000H or above, though is slightly heavier and the screen is 10 or 11 inch but that it work perfectly and so far the feed back over here is good. Currently there are dell mini 9 but then it work similar as aspire one and having similar feature, the lastest model is mini 10 and 12 should be running with HD. There is also another model known as MSI U100, but the screen is slim. One thing you need to take note off, due to it's mini size so it would take something for u to get used to the keyboard, especially if u have big finger (mine is skinny and small, lol) it would be best if you and your wife could went to some shop and have a feel of it, ask and compare the price, another thing u need to take note of there are 3 and 6 cell battery

I've just sold off my aspire one and if my finaicial allow me i would opt for a Lenovo S10 infuture, but then new model are coming out, Lenovo is coming out with two model of S12 one running intel chipset and the other Via chipset. Oh ya, like someone mention some ISP or company are giving it out free or at cheaper price if u sign new line or stuff

LOL  Thanks for the feedback guys...

Having the simple bit of information that I am looking for a 'netbook' instead of an 'ultracompact laptop' makes it HUGELY easier to google!!! Thanks - Brilliant!

I found this "Netbook showdown: The top 10 mini laptops rated" from April this year :9: ... http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39029 ... -11,00.htm

So what do you reckon - the EEE PC thing comes out top with them too
in our tests we managed to eke out a an astonishing 10 hours 32 minutes of use

... Looks promising

Price wise i'm not too sure how much UK fetch but most netbook price here is below 1K range (SGD) you might wanna take a look at the different model of asus eee pc and lenovo and it's feature http://eeepc.asus.com/global/products.html?n=0

As well as the following review of a couple of UMPC like Lenovo S10, Asus Eeepc, HP Mini, HP 2133 etc http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/vi ... 14&id=2723

I have 8.9 Acer and if I was going to do it again I would go with 12" mini. Acer is really nice for the car with a nice map program, but that is about it. If you go with something just little big you might get a cd-rom in it maybe. That is the problem with the mini's no cd-rom. The one other thing most of the mini's only come with 1 to 1.5gbs of ram. I would still go with a 12" or 13" laptops. :D

Another set of reviews here... http://www.trustedreviews.com/filter/la ... ubmit.y=15

NC10 comes top with 10/10 :o and latest (?) EEE PC 1008HA comes 4th with 9/10 8-)

I showed the wife the reviews and she likes the NC10 initially...

So anyway a good plce to start - thanks for your contributions :9:
