BEIJING (Reuters) - A panda at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said Saturday.

The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said.

"The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying after zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Liu, the report said.

"Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed. "I didn't expect he would attack."

D'oh! It's a bear! :o No matter how cute and cuddly they may look, even cubs are still bears! This guy got the lesson he needed, I guess. Chris.

Actually it's more or less a giant racoon and not a bear at all. Just looks like one. I watch National Geographic Channel a lot. :D I guess you shouldn't cuddle with a raccoon either for that matter.

No, I wouldn't get near one of the raccoons we have running around this neighborhood. They are bigger than some dogs, and very tough looking. We get a few possums, too, nasty buggers, all teeth. Good thing I don't let my cats outside (I'm actually more afraid of a cat-car episode than the other animals :( )

You mean if I watch that there tele-vision thingy, I might get to be a might more edumacated? Boy howdy, ma was right! They is more to it than car-tooneys! Chris.

Naah, opossums taint bad a'tall. I us to be an Exterminator way back when and I'll never forget the opossum I had to remove from someone's garage. Just took a snow shovel and put it on top and piece of card board under it and took it out of the garage like a possum sandwich. Worst smelling thing though all musky. Smelled worse than one of the skunks I relocated.

Also, always listen to your Ma. They're right every time.

Yep, HonestJohn knows what he's talking about. Pandas are basically raccoons, writ large. And, after having raised a raccoon from a baby, they are SERIOUS pets. Ferrets are raccoons writ tiny, and I've had a few of those, too. But ferrets only weigh a pound or 2. Raccoons weigh about 10, and Pandas weigh about 120!

Oh, raccoons are fun as pets, just as long as you know what you're getting in to! Imagine a monkey with 4 thumbs! (If you put them in a cage, put a keyed lock on it. they'll watch you open the combination locks, and do it themselves, later.)

How's it going Skou. I had one too for a very short time. My dad brought home a baby raccoon once when I was a kid. He was a lineman for the power company back then and he'd come across all sorts of critters and bring them home. Box Turtles, a one eyed pigeon etc. We didn't keep the raccoon long though and he released it back into the wild. Also had a ferret (Farrah) when I was a teenager as well, smelly, but lot's of fun. Kinda like Farrah Fawcett her namesake. The ferrets act a lot like otters, same family so I guess it makes sense. Kind of like a kitten as well and they were always looking for trouble. :D
