Do not know about this, but as the article states, a slow DNS server causes your surfing to be slow. It sucks even worse when the DNS server goes down.

I would think that an OpenDNS server would be a secondary route to accumulate network traffic by site.

Fair enough Greybear :D

So I guess I'll give it a go, was just wondering if this would (Open DNS) cause issues with already existing ip addresses and what not, or

is that a whole different ballgame and not related to Open DNS .....

=====================================

Question: What Is a DNS Server?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a standard technology for managing the names of Web sites and other Internet domains. DNS technology allows
you to type names into your Web browser like compnetworking.about.com and your computer to automatically find that address on the Internet.
A key element of the DNS is a worldwide collection of DNS servers. What, then, is a DNS server?
Answer: A DNS server is any computer registered to join the Domain Name System. A DNS server runs special-purpose networking software, features
a public IP address, and contains a database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts.

Etc., etc, Etc...

Maybe somebody here already uses Open DNS?? But whom?? :?: :?: :?:

I use OpenDNS but the reason I use it is because of a 'brilliant' idea Comcast came up with the increase their revenue.
This was a little over a year ago so I'm a bit blurry on the details now, but the jest of it was; If you clicked on a link that didn't go anywhere, instead of getting the standard 404 error page (or whatever error page you could get), Comcast would redirect you to their custom error page that would be a flea market of advertising.
Since they would supposedly just sell advertising space on that page, there's no telling what you would get, and the concept that an ad could contain malware scripts meant it was quite possible that the viewers privacy and system security could be at stake, not to mention the plethora of ads 'Directed to the viewers particular interests and location'.

I set up OpenDNS to avoid this Comcast custom page. As for any other benefit, I can't speak of any so I would be interested in anyone's experience with it.

OK! A quick Google search found this: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comc ... ion-103386 found using this search term: Comcast error redirect

Hawk~

That's reason enough to use Open DNS, IMO. :9: Comcast is scan-less, I hate all there damn ads!! They own channel 4 now too, NBC

just Great!!  Over priced cable if I ever saw one, I use it as I hate ATT even more. They Suck Cast Iron Balls as well.

My version of Firefox stops redirection too. Don't know how I set it up that way, but it works. No matter if Open DNS speeds things up or not, it

stops redirecting and that is priceless!! You'd think we deal with enough Damn ads already, but NOOOOOO!! Big Business crams it down our throats.

Any Company that speeds more on advertizing than product improvement and employee benefits make me ill, They all BITE!! (end of rant)

List of biggest advertising spenders, Comcast

READ HERE!! >> http://www.bizjournals.com/philadelphia ... a=e_du_pub

The Philadelphia-based cable giant spent $1.85 billion, including placements in magazines, newspapers,

and outdoor, television, radio and Internet media, an increase of 4 percent.

I wouldn't use AT&T if it was the last telecommunications company on the planet. :x
I also use Firefox and I like that redirection block. It seems more and more people are gravitating to Chrome, but it just doesn't offer the same security options as Firefox, plus I really like some of the Firefox add-ons that Chrome doesn't offer.
Then again, most folks don't have a clue or concern for the security or privacy. That's what helps viruses and malware to be so successful.

I have little choice here but to use AT&T DSL. It's a commercial building (yes, I'm not supposed to live in an office) Don't want Time Warner (altho I do use them for cable) can't get Dish and don't want their internet anyways, awfully slow satelitte stuff.

Firefox with a few add on's like AdBlock is as secure as it gets. Security is down to us, the end user. Don't ever open an e mail or attachment unless it's from someone you trust. Period. And run a good scan tool. I really like Avast! It has a real time scanner, scans every little bit I get in e mails. And I refuse to pay for anti virus when I can get a nice, complete one for free. No virus or malware here for several years now (knocks on wood) :9:
1)Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3, FX4100 Bulldozer, 8Gb G Skill Sniper 1866, EVGA GTX560Ti, 2x 500Gb SATA II, DVDRW, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM
2)stupid board died already *pfffftttt*
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

If you're not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room

I use and like chrome- it is simple less chit less confusing as ff or ei8-9-7. My only complaint about chrome is its spell checker sucks and is no add on for it- most words I have to type them into google to check spelling sucks.

I use free avast and defender and paid for spy sweeper- not going to buy spy sweeper again it nags ya- and will freeze the system until you interact with it and its new crap anti virus all together in one sucks. I do not know if it is trying to upgrade to spy sweeper or the all in one crap. It is good at spy stuff but is a pain in the butt.

I am not sure about the dns stuff- I set my browsers to block 3rd party cookies and such- spy sweeper does the same thing- chrome does have built in security. Avast or spy sweeper catches any stupid stuff- or so far. Not sure what defender does- just update everyday maybe? :D
