How do i maximise the gigabit ethernet lan?

Postby cas » Sun Jul 31, 2011 1:27 am

Since i'm having a gigabit onboard lan and i notice the option of running at 1.0 gbps full duplex. What the stuff i would need to take note of? Getting a N series router? Upgrade my broadband connection plan? :oops:

That gigabit connection is basically for your LAN/ Network. All PC's have to have that to be able to connect at that speed. I have a gigabit switch and router, so all my PC's connect to each other at that speed.

The Internet, hah. We have a high end DSL connection and I see maybe 5 to 6 Mbps. FIOS I think you can get 20Mbps. As far as I know, there is no gigabit internet. And even with a 5Mbps service, my downloads are still only about 640Kbps. I have never figured that one out. :?

2)stupid board died already *pfffftttt*
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

If you're not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room

Some folks are expert at such things and you can config your net or access in a few ways- some folks have dual lans and set up one for in and the other for out. All that stuff is over me- I generally let windows set its defaults. I might tweak game files for best speeds or ping normally lower them a lil for that.

Your best speed in general might be run the wire from your isp router right into your pc. Some added routers or switches can down the speed per channel because of multi channels. Some routers etc might need you to install programs to monitor them or make them run and the programs can cause problems or slowdowns- might be best not to use in box programs and just let windows run it.

My old speedstream router I am using now lowers each of its 4 connections to 6mbs down. My net speeds are verizon fios 15mbs down 5mbs up. I have a dlink 624 sitting here new- but has software to install and I read folks have trouble with connection or stuff being blocked or games and do not care for the head akes. Might move my stuff around and can run the wire right into my pc. Make sure your router or switches what ever run at full speeds. You only need 1 fire wall either on your os or your router etc- the last device on the line before your system or maybe on just the main router that the isp runs out of? I prefer to have my firewall on my system and all hardware down the line is open.

Cycling on off the net and systems can correct many net probs. You start at the pc's and work back to the main isp router or modem. Power off pcs then down the line power off [unplug from the wall] routers or switches can hit reset buttons back to the main router? and then power every thing back on out to your pc and should correct a lot of things and sync stuff up. You do not need to unplug your pc from the wall- just turn it off- but should unplug routers let them sit off at least 30 seconds.

I think I can get fios now with 50mbs down and 20mbs up or something like that at maybe 140 bucks a month- 25x25 is maybe 70 bucks or is packages that include phone and cable tv over the fios also. We have a package net tv and phone- Phone is great with most everything and free long distance and 200 or so mostly suck channels on cable and out 15x5 net was 69.99 first 9 months and then 99.99 the next 15 months I think it is which is like 33 bucks for each the net tv and phone fios service- pretty sweet me thinks..

Oh ya- no limits on bandwidth.

** best bang for the buck here is the 100 buck a month plan with near 300 tv channels and 25x25 net and phone- again that is like 33 bucks a month for each service is not bad and is fios- some can not get it tho- ha ha sucks. :P :D

Are you sure that's not KBps instead of Kbps?
5Mbps is the same thing as 640 KBps.

There's a difference between Bps and bps

bps = bits per second
Bps = bytes per second

It takes 8 bits to equal a byte.

Use your calculator and divide 8 into 5.

That b/B issue is a marketing ploy used by ISP's to make you think you're getting a faster connection that what you actually get.

My advertised download speed is 12 Mbps, but my displayed download speed is 1.5 MBps. It's the same thing. ;)

It really doesn't matter what you do. It is all in who you connect to and how fast they service is. You could have the best connection in the world. But if you connection is only so fast it really doesn’t matter.

Do a speed test on each connection and see what happens. Mine is 15.5mb download, 3.94 upload & 46ms ping. So like I said if you are not getting more than 10 to 100mb does it really matter?

Plus the other thing is most hard drives will only go so fast too. So there is another bottle neck to look at. So it isn't just your lan connection you are looking at. It's your CPU, Memory, & hard drives you have to look at that too.

Yes you will see a little faster speed with the gigabyte vs. 10 to 100. You are talking about the getting N router. You might see a little more in speed vs. a G router. And cable broadband is your fastest internet service.
