WASHINGTON | Mon May 2, 2011 2:36am EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a firefight with U.S. forces in Pakistan on Sunday, President Barack Obama announced, ending a nearly 10-year worldwide hunt for the mastermind of the September 11 attacks.

"Justice has been done," Obama said in a hastily called, late-night White House speech revealing the death of the elusive head of the militant Islamic group behind a series of bloody attacks in cities across the world.

His death, confirmed by officials in Pakistan, was a huge symbolic blow to al Qaeda, which has been beaten back but is still a threat in many countries.

It prompted jubilant flag-waving celebrations in Washington and New York. It was the biggest national security victory for Obama since he took office in early 2009 and could give him a political boost as he seeks re-election in 2012.

Obama may now find it easier to wind down the nearly decade-old war in Afghanistan, begun after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington that killed nearly 3,000.

But the operation could complicate relations with Pakistan already frayed over U.S. drone strikes in the west of the country and the jailing of a CIA contractor accused of killing two Pakistani men.

Obama said U.S. forces led a targeted operation that killed bin Laden in a compound in Abbotabad north of Islamabad. No Americans were killed in the operation and they took care to avoid civilian casualties, he said.

A senior administration official said it was believed that three adults besides bin Laden were killed, including an adult son of bin Laden.

Bin Laden's death triggered a travel alert for Americans worldwide, the U.S. State Department said, warning of the potential for anti-American violence.

Thousands of people gathered outside the White House, waving American flags, cheering and chanting "USA, USA, USA." Car drivers blew their horns in celebration and people streamed to Lafayette Park across from the street, as police vehicles with their lights flashing stood vigil.

"I'm down here to witness the history. My boyfriend is commissioning as a Marine next week. So I'm really proud of the troops," Laura Vogler, a junior at American University in Washington, said outside the White House.

Similar celebrations erupted in New York's Ground Zero, site of the World Trade Center twin towers felled by hijacked airplanes on September 11.

Many Americans had given up hope of ever finding bin Laden after he vanished in the mountains of Afghanistan in late 2001.

Intelligence that originated last August provided the clues that eventually led to bin Laden's trail, the president said. A U.S. official said Obama gave the final order to pursue the operation last Friday morning.

"The United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of men, women and children," Obama said.

CAPTURED DEAD

Former President George W. Bush, who vowed to bring bin Laden to justice "dead or alive" but never did, called the operation a "momentous achievement" after Obama called him with the news.

Martin Indyk, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, described bin Laden's death as "a body blow" to al Qaeda at a time when its ideology was already being undercut by the popular revolutions in the Arab world.

Other experts were more cautious. "It changes little in terms of on-the-ground realities -- by the time of his death bin Laden was not delivering operational or tactical orders to the numerous al Qaeda affiliates across the world," said Rick Nelson of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Statements of appreciation poured in from both sides of Washington's often divided political divide. Republican Senator John McCain declared, "I am overjoyed that we finally got the world's top terrorist."

Said former President Bill Clinton: "I congratulate the president, the national security team and the members of our armed forces on bringing Osama bin Laden to justice after more than a decade of murderous al Qaeda attacks."

Having the body may help convince any doubters that bin Laden is really dead.

The United States is ensuring that bin Laden's body is being handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition, a U.S. official said.

Bin Laden had been the subject of a search since he eluded U.S. soldiers and Afghan militia forces in a large-scale assault on the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in 2001.

The trail quickly went cold after he disappeared and many intelligence officials believed he had been hiding in Pakistan.

While in hiding, bin Laden had taunted the West and advocated his militant Islamist views in videotapes spirited from his hideaway.

Besides September 11, Washington has also linked bin Laden to a string of attacks -- including the 1998 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in Yemen.

Believe what you want to, but he is not dead.

Presently held, by the US government, off the coast of... he and his son are being interogated to find more information about the terrorist network and its ties to the Taliban, as well as its companions within the Pakastani government.

Great. Now he is a martyr. Fuels the terrorists even more. Expect more terrorist attacks "In The Name Of Bin Laden!" His name is like Allah to them. Even if he's just captured and not dead.

What makes you think so? I think like wise initially but with dna proven and even picture of him being killed, is hard to believe he's still alive. Why would the US govt lie to the people of america as well as to the world?

Osama gave himself up inorder to get his son out of the line of fire in return for information. Think about that...and think about the time I made my original post and the news articles that are now appearing about why the US government gave such forethought as to how and where his body should be laid to rest and why.

Obama needed to capture Osama, his poll rating sucks, so when he is told that OSAMA is willing to turn himself in due to his failing health there would have been no way to do this by bringing him in alive. We have enough problem with trying other combatants. Last thing we need is Osama alive, in a holding cell with militants looking to bust him out.

Btw, burial at sea is not proper. Burial as sea means you do not have to produce a body. They had 24hours to bury him, they supposedly had eyes on him, so why the rush to bury and the need for DNA testing? And someone put a pretty big rush on DNA testing which generally takes alot more time to setup and admin for validity.

I more think he is dead and I like how and put to sea. 1 of his sons is dead and they never said anything about prisoners. They did say no offial pictures have come out -but is a lot of fake photos on the net. Said them in the laden camp forced woman in front of them as human shields. Them that put up a fight are dead.

Friends and allies of bin laden will be unhappy. I say 3 Cheers and 3 more. :D :P :9:

Haven't checked Snopes, but Drudge Reports says he's dead, along with one son. And yes, they did use women as body shields. Cowards. Glad he's gone. But I still say, it's not gonna change much, except to fuel more attacks.

Not sure if the woman was forced or they tried to shield some of the men or laden. They think he had like 9 wives with him and 23 children. Guess he got an early start on all the virgins. Think they get like 75 virgins when they die?

Hmm- maybe I am cheap. I would fight and die for 2 or 3 virgins. :D :P

Ill say it one more time for those in the cheap seats that cannot understand this equation......

Now listen close and think.... The President signed the order to go in and get OSAMA.....

They offered him a chance to come out alive and give himself up. But think of the forethought they placed into where to bury him.
They supposedly shot and killed him in a gun fight. But he was unarmed.

They took a DNA EXPERT with them, Why? They had eyes on him, they knew he was there, had layouts of his abode.

They had 20minutes after the battle to gather intel. They were in and out in 44minutes.

They gathered up the body and flew it to a ship.
These were Seals based in Afghanistan. Why not return here?

They DNA tested and confirmed in less than 1 hour. As if they knew they could not ID the body.

They had someone ready to wash, clean and wrap the body according to Islamic Law for burial.
They have 24hours to bury the body. So why the rush to bury in less than 3 hours?
They gave it a burial at see, which is somewhat against Islamic Law.
They had the FORETHOUGHT to not want a Burial site that could be used as a Shrine.

So, therefore, they went in with a plan only to kill and gather, the first helicopter had a mechanical problem and the Seals had to destroy it. 3 Copters in 2 leave with all the people, atleast 1 corpse, 5 computers, 10 harddrives, thumbdrives, files, photos......

Now follow this....

3 copters fly in with very few people.
Occupants of the compound are waiting for them.
Osama and his son turn over all the files, drives, thunbdrives. This gives the President a necessary boost in the polls for his re-election,
The copter was meant to be destoryed, the corpses were staged.
No, OSAMA nor his bodyguard used a WOMAN as a shield, the Presodent stated that that did not happen.
The Copters fly to a non-disclosed location.
Validity of the Intel garnered is reviewed, and the Son is garanteed asylum, a fake name, and body guards here in the US.
OSAMA, would have had to be tried and it would have been both costly and a circus, but now he remains under arrest as a dead man that they can kill at will.
They dispose of the body ""Supposedly"" in a way that no one can prove, nor test later.
Theyll release photos in the next week or so that shows what may or maynot be a dead person or two, that may or may not be who they say they are and tell you that you must believe its who they say it is because it is....its not.

This might as well be Arnold Schwarzeneggers comeback movie The Eraser II.
