After upgrade to Q9650, IX38 having boot issues

Postby jhferry » Sun Apr 12, 2009 1:43 am

I upgraded to a Q9650 from a E0 E8400. I had bios v14.

Everything seemed to go smooth, until I powered down. When I turn the PC on from a cold boot it wont post. It starts to but cuts out (like the power went out). It does this in different places and seems to come after the verifying dmi screen. If I reset the bios to defaults, most of the time I can get into windows. Then its fine.

Based on this I updated to the beta E0 bios going around. Now windows sees the correct cpu and all seemed good. It ran all night when I left it on. Turned it off and same issue. I have a beefy 750w PSU and its so weird that when I get a good boot its fine. I think it may have something to do with the OCZ Reaper DDR2 settings but Im not sure. I just thought maybe the right DDR voltage settings mix with this CPU may be the key.

*OCZ part number:-OCZ2RPR10664GK
* Module size and kit size:-4GB 2x2GB kit
* CPU model and rated speed:-Intel Core 2 quad Q9650
* Motherboard and revision:-ABIT IX38 Quad GT
* Motherboard Bios rev:-14/Beta E0
* Video card:-EVGA Nvidia 8800GS
* Power supply:-PSU Corsair TX-750W 750wa
* Operating System:-XP
* CPU and System Cooling:-stock

So I tried to install Vista on a new drive and boot off that. Same issue. If I reset the CMOS I can get in and stay in to Windows all day until I shut down. Once I power down, it dies again. It seems to always puke after verifying dmi pool data and right before the Windows login screen. I get the bsod (quick flash) and then it shuts down or loops.

I was almost ready to give up but if this CPU was not compatible or the Ram was bad but someone from another board told me to pull the OS hard drive and see If the problem still exists and it doesnt. After Verifying DMI pool data I get the insert system disk message but it doesnt shut down, even If I power off so that person said there may be a setting in the CPU OC'ing settings that is off. I am back on bios 14 and it is all on defaults. Ram is set according to spec and under spec just to see If it would run stable. I have confirmed someone else running the cpu with bios 14 on this board so I dont want to give up on it.

What I meant was that since the problem disappeared with the removal of the OS drive, that maybe it was something like UGURU or another program that has OCing settings when it boots.

But, I hadnt read where you had done a Clean install of VISTA.

But, arent we having a different issue presently? Thought we were to a point now you cant get a boot due to dropping the battery? Other post has something to try for that.

The great IX38 boot problems with some CPU. Before Abit went down there was a thread on the same problem. I had two of these boards and was having problems with just one till I change PSU. After that everything was fine. I when from a 650w to a 750w and than to a 550w and than everything was fine. Plus I have heard that this board has many different problems too. The only thing I would do is reset the cmos and just set memory volts and that is it and see what happens. For some reason this board doesn't like to many changes. Most of the times if the computer is turning off after startup it has to do with the cpu and volts to the cpu. Good Luck

I went to the other thread and boy he had a lot of people telling stuff. When I have a problem take one step back and think about it and just do the basic to get it running and go from there. From what I'm getting from this when he had the other CPU in everything was fine. Change CPU now having problems. Maybe the board doesn't like the CPU ???? Yes bios 14 should support this CPU but is it.

Had a computer one time that the PSU went bad. Change the PSU and nothing. So I thought the MB was bad and for hell of it I took out the battery and cleared the cmos. Let it sit for about a day put everything back in and change the PSU and the thing is still running till this day. The PSU had gone bad and locked up the MB. I have see some funny things with computers.

I had a computer from a friend and the house had been hit by lighting. The only thing wrong was the MB was bad and everything else was fine. Went through the PSU and cook the MB. Replace MB and till this day it is still running fine.

I saw this same couple get their dial-up modem get hit 3 times.

The first time, took out the modem. :? The second, took the new modem and the sound card. :shock: The thrid took the modem and the onboard video. :o

Generally, I only hear of people getting struck once. But that old HP kept on ticking. Best POS I had ever seen from HP. :mrgreen:

Most I have had happen to mine (other than stupidity) was blowing PSU's, but that could be considered stupidity also cause I knew they were too small. But the high pitch was kinda soothing - and no one else could hear it for awhile, then it got worse.

Talking about PSU I always said that PSU were over rated. I always got the cheapest PSU that I could. My AB9-Quad GT is running a antec 500w psu with 3 hdd's, 2 cd, floppy, Q6600, 8 gbs memory & two 4850 512mb video cards in a antec 900 case with 4 fans. That psu has been in that computer for over two yrs and on 24hrs day. When abit foum was up and running I would read some of the threads and if somebody was having a problem the first thing was ask was what is you psu or psu is to small. I just want to start laughing. :lol: I think all of us have done some stupid stuff at one time or another don't feel bad. :oops:

Oddly enough, more than 60% of those "What size / type PSU are you using" responses were actually solved with a PSU with a higher 12V rating.

Sometimes tho, you can get 2 Identical PSU's and one of them will not work on the same rig...when I bought my 2 IWIN cases, the 300Watt PSU's, one would not post the board. Its running in my old old rig right now without issues. I build them in sets of 2, so I always have a way to test all parts, plus got tired of the wife wanting to use my computer all the time.

Ive seen to many rigs tho that killed different components when the PSU died. For myself, thats generally how I get to do my upgrades :P
