BIOS upgrade

Postby BloodStripe » Sat Apr 04, 2009 4:47 am

Hey guys,

If my system is humming along just perfectly, is there any reason to update the BIOS? Thanks.

Definately .................. NO! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There is always a chance of a bad flash, or the updated BIOS doesn't like some of your hardware. ;) Chris.

Thanks Chris. You confirmed what i already thought.

What if I decide later on to upgrade my processor to maybe a Q9550 or something like that. Will that require a BIOS flash?

The reason I'm asking is that I don't see any reason why my pc can't last me at least 4 more years, with only upgrading the cpu and gpu. What do you think?

If you upgrade, try the present BIOS and then decide.

Exactly, if the current BIOS identifies the new CPU then you should be good to go. But if it doesn't, it may set the wrong core voltage and could damage the CPU, so just a quick power up, enter BIOS, if the CPU is correct, then you are good to go. If not, then power it off, get the latest BIOS and flash from DOS.

You could also take a look at the BIOS revisions for that board to see if there is a specific one for the CPU you plan to get. If there isn't one then the current BIOS probably cover it. Chris.

Thanks fellas.

Just curious. With the fall of Abit, what is your new favorite motherboard manufacturer? Is it a toss up between Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI?

Thanks again.

Mine would never include MSI in the list.

ASUS should devote some time to their Website / Forum / Server bandwidth.

I have run DFI boards in the past and will probably get one for my next upgrade. In fact, I think a lot of the top designers from Abit went to DFI a few years back.

But right now, I have no pressing need to upgrade, a quad would be cool, but not really necessary. And my X2 6400+ in this KN9 SLI runs really really good. Best board I have ever owned. Chris.
