CoolerMaster PSU Wattage Calculator

Postby MUff1N » Mon Jul 20, 2009 6:34 pm

It's the Cooler Master PSU Wattage calculator...
http://www.coolermaster.com/support/psu_calculator.php
Make sure to click the Advanced tab which gives you much more options on what's going into your system. ;)
I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but it does give you an idea of what you'll need.

I was surprised at the power requirements for my system.
Seems right now I'm around 200 watts over what's needed! Nothing wrong with too much power!!! :P

Thanks, Muff1n. I checked it out myself, I have about 50% too much, about 300 watts over what I should have.

Well, it says I need 375W power supply and I used advanced and selected more devices than I even have. So I don't know if this PSU Calculator will do more harm than good for some people because I can't think of a single 375W PSU that would be good enough to run my system using a GTX 285. Let alone one which would allow me to overclock the video card as well as my CPU. I say this because it''s not all about the wattage, the life-blood of most mid-range to high-end video cards is going to be the +12V rail amperage. An average 375W PSU will have maybe a 15A-18A +12V rail. Official PSU recommendations for my GTX 285 are for a 40A +12V rail (total system power). Even if this is overestimated a bit by the manufacturer a 375W PSU will not have the amperage on the +12V rail even if the wattage is sufficient. Chris' GTX 260 is also spec'd for a 36A +12V rail (total system power). So you're right, it's definitely not 100% accurate as you said.

Actually as anyone with any with computer building knowledge knows, the best thing to do is just sit down & figure it out exactly the power requirements for everything in your system. (Which I did)
Then I added an additional 100w of power for overhead & voltage spikes so I knew no matter what the power would be covered.

The PSU Calculator is actually more of a novelty than it is a working model. ;)

I'm sure a member of the CoolerMaster "Club" will see it's not calculating correctly & have them fix it to where it does
because you are correct in the assumption it's way under powering systems which can do a LOT of DAMAGE!!! :o

I have argued this on several threads.....IGN VNboards.

Their belief in the calculators is unwieldingly strong. The statement about the over head is great, but the issue comes down to....

100watts overhead = ?? x 3.3v / ?? x 5v / ?? x 12v

This is also a problem with the calculators, they do not break it down. So therefore, you may have the overhead trapped on the unused rails.

So, maybe the calculators means xxxwatts on the 12v rail, and this would make a little more sense, as it is putting in the overheads via the neglect of the 3.3v and 5v rail info. But they should state that.

The over head also plays into the spikes, but the other thing is heat and age. As little as 1 month or 77 degrees of ambient temp can cause decrease in wattage, or an increase in wattage demand.

Sure you can go 800-1000 Watt, but why? These Corsairs scream!! :9:

No I don't run any app to tell me crap about it, I just know it kicks BUTT

All the Power I need and then SOME ;)

Folks are picky about their PSU's at least if your on the ball.

The PSU is the Heart of my PC. Very important.

Yes the CoolerMaster PSU Wattage Calculator is nice and good info. :9:

But I think the PSU thing is so over rated that I want to start  at all the numbers they throw at you. I have been building computers for more than 14 yrs. I'm one the those guys that they computer should not run with the PSU I use. By what they are saying I need 850w PSU for my AB9-QuadGT and it has a Antec 500 PSU - with a P4 Q6600 G.Skill 8GB (4 x 2GB) (2)ATI x4850-512mb Crossfire - Antec 900 case - 4 HDD, 1 DVD, 1DVD/RW, Floppy, Card reader and what ever usb device I can hook into it. Plus it has been running for almost 3 yrs. :o By what they are saying I need 850w PSU to run my Intel i7 Q920 I have a SILVERSTONE 700W. It is about how much they can make people think they need that high watts PSU and how much money they are make off of you.
