Setting RAM timings on socket AM2/ AM2+ Abit boards

Figured this would be a good Topic to post here. All Abit socket AM2/ AM2+ boards have a problem with the BIOS not setting the RAM voltage or timings correctly by default, or SPD as it's called. So here you go!
1) Before you start this, you need to know the specs of the RAM you have. There should be a sticker on the stick of RAM telling you the basic timings and the voltage. Something like 5-5-5-15 2.1v. If there is no sticker, go to the website for the maker of the RAM and look up that particular part.

2) To enter the BIOS, when you first power on the PC, start tapping the "DEL" key. After a few seconds, you should see the Award BIOS screen. If not, wait until Windows starts, then restart and try it again. ;)

3) Once in BIOS, choose "SoftMenu Setup" Arrow down to Voltage Control. Change it from Default to User Define by pressing the PgUp or PgDn keys. Now arrow down to "DDR2 Voltage" Again use the PgUP or PgDn keys to set the correct voltage. Press ESC to exit that section.

4) Arrow down to "Advanced Chipset Features" and press Enter. Press Enter again at DRAM Configuration. Change "DRAM Timing Selectable" to Manual. Set "DRAM Clock" to the speed of your ram, for example "DDR2 800". Set "CAS Latency" to the first timing on the sticker on your RAM. "Trcd" is the second number. "Trp" is the third number. "Tras" is the 4th number. "Command Rate" for DDR2 RAM on an AM2/ AM2+ board should be set to 2T.

5) Arrow down to "Trfc" The first one will be set correctly, example: 105 ns. The others need to be set the same as the first one, but only for how many sticks of RAM you have installed. Example: for 2 sticks of DDR2 800 RAM in the first and second slots closest to the CPU, set "Trfc0" and "Trfc1" to 105 ns. For 4 sticks set all slots the same.

You can pretty much leave all the other settings in this section alone. Now, press the F10 key, it will ask "Save and Exit?" say "Y" and press enter. Now Windows should be happy, and so will you!

*!* Personal Notes: I DO NOT recommend running 4 sticks of RAM on one of these boards unless all 4 sticks were bought at the same time as matching sticks. If you want more memory, buy another 2 sticks with greater capacity and sell the 2 sticks you now have (or keep them as spares ;) ) Example: If you have 2GB and want 4Gb, buy 2x 2Gb sticks, don't add 2 more 1Gb sticks.

DO NOT mix different brands, speeds or sizes of memory sticks because this will most certainly cause you serious headaches.

If you have questions regarding the performance of your board or issues with RAM on your board, please post them in the corresponding catagory in our Motherboard help section. Chris.
