Need some help on XFX 9600GT

Postby cas » Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:07 am

This card has been working well on my rig for past 2-3 yr till lately when i play game or even surf, at time i'll get garbish image, restart etc. Which lead me to suspect is due to temps issue, have yet to check whether the fan is working.

Right now i'm gonna put some thermal grease on the nvidia GPU as you could see from the image here. Hmm if it still doesn't work, do you guys think by changing a fan it would work or there's a likely hood there's some component or chipset failing? Any advise would be appreciated

My thoughts on this...Replace the card and use a different driver.

Why I say that...if its over heating when surfing, thats a 2D process unless using VISTA AERO GLASS. So, if it is 2D that needs no cooling. Garbling means its history.

Unless your using Win7 and did not reset the Refresh rate from the default 85mHz.

Hmm i didn't knew we need to reset the refresh rate on the default 85mhz, i did use it on win 7 as well as vista, let me try and get back to you guys later and btw is a 8600GT, typo error :(

Just wanna update, i've apply some thermal grease and put back the fan and inserted the card back to it's pcie slot and fire up my rig, initially i got some garbish and tiny dots in bios during POST as well as within bios setup, it detectd the card and load the windows default driver, so far so good (10 minutes) would try playing CA and see whether is stable

But then i discover the temps is quite high though i have yet to start any games yet

There was a Topic a while back, could have been on the Abit Forums, about thousands of the 8xxx series Nvidia cards having bad silicone. XFX has a lifetime warranty, doesn't it?

Try Riva Tuner to controls the fan speed (or EVGA Precision tool) turn the fan up all the way.
1)Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3, Phenom II 970, 8Gb G Skill Sniper 1866, EVGA GTX470SC, 2x 500Gb SATA II RAID 0, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM
2) AX78, Phenom 9500, 2Gb OCZ PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX+, CDRW, XP Pro SP2
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

If you're not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room

Is it? Personally i've yet to have any issue with XFX card, till lately. Over here our graphic card doesn't comes with life time warrantly as it was brought in by the local distro, most card only have 2-3 year warrantly and mine just over the stated warrantly period. Btw i've just tested rivta tuner and EVGA precision tool, both also work

Just a thought do you guys push the GPU fans speed to a max or whether you're gaming or suring the net or just let it run at default?

Alright, i try playing CA for 20 minutes and so far so good, except the temps of the GPU seem abit high as compare to the other card 9500GT though i've did run EVGA precision tool and push it to 84% for the fans speed, other than that everything seem to be back to normal

If XFX does have a Lifetime Warranty, it is voided with the removal and replacement of the heatsink and thermal paste.

But if your getting DOTS in the BIOS or boot screen, that tends to point to heat / memory damage on the card.

Win 7 automatically sets all my cards, both nVidia and ATI to a 85mHz refresh rate. For me, the first thing I notice is a white line at the top of the screen. Can this lead to your problem? I think so, but no proof. Also, there was a set around the 192.xx series (sorry it could be a plus or minus of 1) that caused issues with other users and seems like they had cards overheating again.

This is one reason I do not follow the guide of Update Drivers constantly.

Damn, i encounter hang and some garbish image while playing games but it appear fine when i just use it to surf the net, restarted the comp and still occurs, so i crank up the fans speed using evga precsion tool also no dice

Next i rebooted and install windows 7 and try running the game using win 7 default graphic drivers but it doesn' allow me to start the game. Next i install the latest driver from nvidia and when i start CA, similar thing occurs, shit i guess is the end of my 8600GT, might need to get a new card soon
