LCD screen 'shimmering' ???

Postby Graphite » Wed Nov 18, 2009 7:45 pm

On my wifes updated system we have an AGP Powercolor Radeon HD 4670. The monitor is a 20" LCD from Belinea 2025s http://www.lcdmonitor.org.uk/20-inch-lc ... d-monitor/ which only has VGA input.

In large areas of white screen particularly she sees 'shimmering'! - It didn't seem to be a problem with the 6600GT that has been replaced. - It has been improved a little by dropping the brightness and increasing the contrast. On researching it a bit on the web - I have found some people saying it is due to the VGA cable and idealy to replace with DVI but if not possible then to replace 'freebie' cable from supply box with a better quality item.

Anyone had experience of this?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

If the card and the monitor both have DVI connectors, definately get a DVI cable. Not sure if a "better" quality VGA cable will help or not.

I had to disassemble my lcd tv to get to see the electronics board and I had two swollen capacitors in it...I soldered in two new ones and reassembled the board and it worked.

Woot. But you know, if there are more of those capacitors, something else is likely to go next. It might be an issue requiring more ventilation.

I'd wager those caps were on a small board that powers the fluorescent tubes. They go out all the time. One reason I got an LCD that uses LED backlight. Doesn't have that switching power supply. ;)
