Help- installing Win7 x64 on AV8 system

Postby Graphite » Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:06 pm

I have bought a second SATA drive for my wifes AV8 machine and am trying to install Windows 7 Professional x64 as a dual boot with Win XP Pro x32.

The installation starts up OK but seems to hang on the blue scene with the dove. If I eject the DVD I imediately get the 'Install Windows' splash screen. When I select my location and click the 'Install Now arrow' I get to a screen saying:

"A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flashdrive please insert it now. Note: If the windows installaton media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step"

It does this whether I have both SATA drives connected or just the new one.

When I try to start 'old windows' with the new drive connected it reboots partway through the windows starting up screen.

The last thing is that I have purchased a student upgrade for my wifes machine (she does qualify ;) ) The media I am installing from is a retail DVD from the early offer - I assume the software is the same and that when I enter the student code I will then be asked for my Win XP code to justify the upgrade status???

Any advice appreciated :9: Saving me some uneeded work would be great :D , saving me from trashing my wifes machine would save my life

Thanks guys

Mick

Having moved the DVD units cable connection from Slave to Master - all went well with the loading :D

But then the setup system could not find either of my SATA hard drives :x

Having disconnected the new drive it booted up fine on the old system... Thank goodness

You need to change the SATA speed to SATA I, that board will not see a SATA II drive. Seagate and Western Digital drives us a small jumper, Samsung and Hitachi drives use a utility called a Feature Tool which must be run on a SATA II capable machine, to change the drive's mode.

Thanks Chris

I downloaded ES Tool from the samsunghdd.com site which since my main PC still has a floppy drive I was able to run by floppy. So it is now a SATA 1.5 - hopefully all will be well now :D

OK -Thanks - all fine and dandy now

I had a bit of a problem with the ATi drivers for the HD 4670 AGP card  tried about 4 different versions before going to the manufacturers website - Powercolor - they have a driver that actually works and recognises the card

So - we're getting there now :9:

Cool. Glad I could help! I really loved my AV8, one of my first "high performance" Abit/ VIA boards. Was probably VIA's best chipset. But I gave it up when I went to PCI-E. A freind still has it and it runs great for him.
