Acer travelmate 4150 (need u guys help)

Postby cas » Tue May 19, 2009 12:34 pm

I'm troubleshooting the above notebook for a customer, when i power on and let it boot into window desktop, within a second it goes blank and next there's lot's of line on the screen, but wierd thing is when i hit F2 i'm able to go into bios setup with no issue and the image and screen look fine and normal

But once i reboot and try booting into window desktop again it would shows those lines and not long after it shows a blank screen. Any advise or help would be appreciated :?

Sounds like the onboard video is bad. It works in BIOS because the video drive is not being used. But then once Windows loads the driver, the card messes up. Or, it could be the owner updated to the wrong video driver? See if you can get the correct video driver and burn it to a CD. Then go into Safe Mode on the laptop and uninstall the current video driver. Reboot and see if the screen stays on. If it does, then load the driver from the CD. If the screen gets screwed up again it's a bad onboard graphics. Chris.

If onboard graphic is bad, anyway to have it replace or we would need to change the whole mobo? I too suspect it could be due to the graphic

Some of the high end laptops (expensive gaming laptops mostly) have a removable graphics card, but most laptops have the graphics chip soldered right onto the main board. You will either have to open it up or go to Acer's website to find out. Chris.

Hey Chris I've just hit F8 and go into safe mode as well as safe mode with networking, both also got the following error with a dialog box
the system is not fullly installed, please run setup again
hmm....

Lastly it comes with recovery CD as well as recovery utility within the hd. And here's the link for the drivers and manual http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/no ... _4150.html

Ugh, not good. This could mean the hard drive is failing, or the main board itself is failing because it has the graphics and the hard drive controller in the same chip (South Bridge) If you put the recovery CD in the drive and boot to it, you should have the option to repair Windows, and hopefully there won't be any files lost. That's the main thing I worry about is losing someone's personal info. Good luck and take it slow, one step at a time. Chris.

Everything is running fine, except the nvidia drivers for the onboard video, once i install the vertical lines appear again, next i've have to go into safe mode and have it uninstall and now is back to normal. Fyi the onboard video is nvidia geforce Go 6200. Wondering which drivers should i used? The current driver version is V74.00

Windows XP

Windows Vista

Preferrably, I would go even further back. But these are knwn good drivers. I assume this is VISTA if this is presenting on the desktop, cause I would not expect the desktop to use the 3D otherwise.

Try going into SAFE MODE, removing the nVidia drivers. Then booting into Normal Windows. If it present before the nVidia installs drivers, it could be something else.

I downloaded the above nvidia drivers for xp and halfway through the setup i get the following error
the nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit
i'm now stuck only with this driver, or else is almost complete
