ADSL Router advice please...

Postby Graphite » Fri Jan 29, 2010 11:25 am

I've just re-signed with AOL for 18 months and got another new router! LOL

Currently using a Netgear DG834Gv3 running well - no problems. The new router is a D-Link DSL2640R/AL - supposedly high speed... But the download speeds I can achieve even on the wireless connections are often about the limit of the 8 MB incomming connection! - So doesn't seem any point in connecting it up just to have a faster router - Am I right?

The second question is - I would like to be able to shut off wireless access to certain devices at certain times (eldest son has just aquired his first iPod touch   ) - Ideally on a schedule - but the only way of doing this I can see on the Netgear is to delete the device from the wireless access list - but then you have to manually relist it on the page - a bit tedious... The alternative is to disconnect the router from the power supply overnight (saves me from having to wear my little foil hat in bed too... )
The D-Link apparently has a disconnectable ariel - which presumably would do the same job - but not really much difference...
Any ideas on how to get round it?

Thirdly - My mobile phone (Sony Ericsson P1i) connects only with wireless 'b' - it is supposed to be able to handle WPA and WPA2 - but I can't get it to connect so I run WEP (with wireless access controls turned on) which it is fine with, I would obviously rather be able to run a more secure protocol - am I likely to see any improvement with the D-Link transmissions?

Any advice much appreciated

Cheers

My opinion, if these are routers you already own, play with them.

Check the speeds and the menu options that they do allow, as my WRT54G allows for blocking of Mac addies based on time....

So, worst case, you should be able to block him from 10pm to 6:30am :)

To shut off wireless access to certain devices, just add the device Mac ID. You could alway remove the Mac ID from the router config page when you intend to allow it to access. Btw if the other party without knowing the ssid and passphrase of the router and with wpa turn on, there's no way he could access using it's wireless device

OK - thanks guys...

Greybear - your linksys might be what I need  I can't see any equivalent options on my Netgear!

I'll look for an online manual for the D-Link and see waht they've got - don't really want to open it in case I end up selling it on...

Is there anyway of using 2 ADSL routers on the same ADSL line to run 2 seperate WiFi networks - ie secure WPA2 one for PCs / Laptops and one on WEP with timelimits for Phone, iPod, and games machines? - my netgear is capable of WDS and I would guess so is the D-Link...

- or would having one system with WEP compromise the other and so not really give any improvement anyway?
