ezeht wrote:Why do you need to reformat or even install w7 again- just update w7 and the sp1 it came out a few months ago. Works fine for me- it will save a folder incase you do have probs so you can fall back. I kept mine for like a month no probs and deleted it its like 92mbs.

You say format?- what install w7 again- if so why?

All you should have to do is run your system and update your lan- w7 installs the lan when you install the os- Id let it w7 update it lan if it wants too- sound and vid card should be fine. You only have to update the vid and sound if it has probs- and let all your programs and windows update- run some security scans and defrag is it.. W7 runs pretty clean- I do not know maybe your system has been off all this time so it should be good to go- just need some updates is it?

Hope so any way..

Erik~

I'm just saying sooner or later I'll rebuild my system, have new hard drives etc.

So I'll format my old ones, use them as external units perhaps. I like to format

every couple years ;) Get rid of everything start with a clean W7 install. Trust me,

that won't be for a while have to save up, you know the drill. Your right though W7 is a awesome

OS, better than XP in my book :9: W7 is smart, it will get recent drivers installed, all I do is install my vid drivers

Sound is up to date, lan, everything. Not sure what drv I should use for my gtx275 ftw card? :?:

I looked at nv drivers, and most of the new drivers are for the newest nv gfx cards, not mine

I left having a state of the art system and come back to an out of date system, not to bad though.

So how ya been, mr Erik?? :o

I am pretty good blue thanks for asking..

I am using precision 2.0.1 and nv drivers 260.99 and runs well for me- a lot of the newer drivers are more for the 400 or 500 cards me thinks.. I read w7 runs more clean and not so much needed to reformat and install windows again like older versions- many save image of his drive and reinstall the os from it. I am not sure if the image needs to be the same size as the drive partition or not which for me would be 250 gigs for my c drive- I do not have enough storage just for a 250 image. So when ready I will do it the old way I just built it in dec 2010 or so so I have another 1 1/2 years before I worry on that tho. I like w7 for gaming but w7 is more glitchy than xp imo- I might like xp a lil more still but w7 is not bad at all- I like it and learn a lot and more and more every day. I build and tweak my own and have to figure out my own probs- All my games run and well so. I read others have lots of probs- I have very few and is stupid lil w7 glitchy stuff. I am happy with my new rig tho- get me a better vid card maybe a oc it will be great. Maybe some new games to boot- bliss Ha ha ha ha

Stupid lil stuff install stalker- but patches will not install unless move them to my e storage drive type silly chit- took me 17 hours to figure that one out. Now all patches if download exe or have them on my external drives I put them on my storage drive first then install them- nip it before it starts. W7 can do silly stuff sometimes- I like it tho.. W7 and codecs are more trouble than xp also for videos what ever..

My os just got sp1 a few months ago- I was reading in 1 of your posts you are using sp2? maybe that was a pre version of the os or another version- mine is hpu? I thought sp1 is the only and first sp update or is the only 1 w7 has prompted me on?

I was just at the pit and looking at a over clock guide for my type cpu but it was for a 760- mine is 750 so I am not sure what setting changes id have to make- but is other guides for my cpu and straight up over clock right 4 gigs off the bat and test and see if all good. Might have to up vcore a lil maybe mem voltage- But I have been told this mem over clocks great at stock v of 1.5v. Some mem can act stupid if up voltage or much on it- but to these are 4 gig stix kit 8 gig total.

I am not ready to worry on oc yet- I still like to read on it from time to time. I see few folks post at the pit or in gaming anyway. I started a lot of the game threads before my ban. I go there some times just to read and what some of my old buds are doing these days- I always liked wizz and some others and some folks at abit was very helpful and knew what they was talking about when trying to help. Maybe not so at msi site.. It games really well- dx10 can stress my old card a lil- and more heat- I up fan speeds some its all good tho.. Cant max everything with the old card my 88 does pretty dam good tho.. Which you know me I stay on top of it and built my bud dan 1 near just like mine. It is threads and photos in tech area section.. Was supposed to service his rig today but waiting on the [trees] man 024~ ha ha..

By the way- your system is fine and has lots of life left in it and just like it is- a dx11 vid card maybe is about it bub. Maybe a ssd if talking drive for your os and put the other for storage- them 2 changes are the best things you can do or might worry on- but ssd have a short life remember that.. I would not sweat the rest..

Maybe if you have all the dlc's for borderlands we can co op sometimes maybe get scavy to play with us also. I/we have lots of great gear- happy to share with ya. Videos in the borderlands thread. Me and scavy hook up sometimes but he has other games he plays a lot or at times so..

I really am glad you are back bud- Hope you are well and the wing doing ok- family good and all that stuff.. :D :9:

For whatever it's worth, I use a utility called Karen's Replicator for all my back up needs. It's a lot faster than Windows. Not sure if it would be faster than the Steam back up utility though.

The only downside, if you can call it that, is that Karen passed away on April 12th of this year so I don't know how much longer the site will be around. Plus it's obvious that there will be no more updates to her plethora of utilities.

Postby ezeht » Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:32 pm

A lil late to the op but- I do not have a lot of steam games. I normally just install everything fresh when ready and only install the games I am playing and when done delete them. I always find my save game folders for all my games steam or not. I think most all valve games are in that steam apps- some non steam games will use the same save folder and others will be in my games some will have its own main stand alone in apps but not in my games - some in other sections also. I google what ever if needed to find out where each game puts its save folder is best you can do but most are in those 2 locations.

Any way my net speed I can download 2 or 3 games at a time while I nap or sleep- few hours later they are all done. Might be a few pop ups or will pop up when I start the games. You can always download a few more games the next night etc- you can only play one game at a time any way- or play 100 games 1 hour at a time and change to another game and play for an hour? That is still 100 hours play time and only 1 hour into 100 games when you could have finished 1 game in well short of that time- or most games today any way- And deleted it and installed and playing another game. I have backed up the whole steam folder and drag and drop before but in xp- I have so few steam games I do not worry on it any more- you others have many steam games I see your needs.

If I was some of you guys that have many games you do not play and might not ever finish- I would not install them all any way- it will free up disc space. If you have started a game and want to back up its saves and might someday play the game - back them up- but install steam fresh and only install 1 to 3 games you will play- let it download while you sleep it is no sweat- add your back up saves if needed. I would not have 100 games on my pc if I am not or might not ever play them. Maybe you guys have taras of disc space to burn or more to lose in one shot if a hdd goes bad. I try and limit my c: to like 250 gigs max and keep it about half full- scans and defrags are faster and not so much to lose if probs. So I have to install only a few games at a time- I like it like that. You others have your reasons for what you do- do as you like. :D

Oh ya blue- I have save game files for fo3 or maybe any game I have and play- Might even have some older before I got the goty game saves. Not sure you can use the saves I have now unless you have the goty or all the dlcs. You are welcome to any files I have. If you could use them and if not to large I could email ya the files or use xfire if large files? :D :9:

*** I just install or delete my games right from steams gui- You can do the back up all of it from here- just right click on the game name. I only have the 4 games installed. When I am done with my second ds2 and mafia2 play throughs I will delete them- jc2 and my fo3 goty are more permanent- and will free up space I could install another game or 2 and play them.

I have about 70 games thru Steam. About 6 or 7 installed. The rest are ready and waiting. I love Steam. I don't need a bunch of CD's that will get borrowed (usually never to return) or scratched or lost. :9:

As to the original topic, I have come to realise, all you need is to backup the "steamapps" folder, and your Documents folder.
1)Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3, FX4100 Bulldozer, 8Gb G Skill Sniper 1866, EVGA GTX560Ti, 2x 500Gb SATA II, DVDRW, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM
2)stupid board died already *pfffftttt*
3) AX78, Phenom 9600, 2Gb OZC PC6400, EVGA 9800GTX, CDRW/DVD, CM CP600PCAR 600W, XP Pro Sp2

If you're not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room
