Windows 7 and games......post your problems here

Figured I had better make an "all in one" Topic here. It started with Quake 4 and now it's..............

MASS EFFECT*sigh* But, this is the D2D downloaded version and I seem to remember I had issues with it before. But that was with missing textures. Now it simply will not install. Period. Nada. Cancel's itself. *sigh* *sigh* Chris.

Chris Sevenforums has a game compatibility list going here and they have Mass Effect as a working title. Don't know how accurate it is since you're having issues with the game, although you did say it's a D2D title ...

Chris~

Try installing it in Safe-mode. That way nothing will get in the way, sounds like an app is blocking it.

Or the Download is Corrupt.

Direct to Drive is something I have very little knowledge of. Wish I could help more.

It's Avast. LOL!! :D Ditch it and use MSE. See your thread "Had to give AntuVir the Boot!!" in OD.

MSE all the WAY Brother!! Yee Haaa!! Actually I have no idea if Avast has a thing to do with it.

I'm pretty sure you tried to install it with Avast turned off, already. Right, I thought so.

If that's even possible, he heee!! Just playing. Hmmm give my some time to think on it. ;)

:Bananas:

Mass Effect has DRM as well, I believe, however that should not stop you, or I wouldn't think so?

Great Link HJ!!

I'm gonna get it from Steam, it's only $20. If I'm going to take the time to download 7.19Gb again, I'd rather get it from another source that I trust. It could be that Direct 2 Drive has issues with Win 7, too.

Downloaded versions of games, AFAIK, don't have DRM like the original does. At least the "can only install so many copies" thing because, like this, what if you have to re-download it several times? It worked fine on Vista but we already know that doesn't mean it's gonna work on Win 7.

I'll take a look at Seven Forums later, thanks, John!

EDIT: went to Seven Forums, 2 things I noticed. The Author says "Beta build 7000" they should update to RC 7100 by now, eh? And he hasn't updated that list since 4/13/09? Nice find, tho. I prolly should join over there one of these days. But man, that's a whole lot of stuff to read! :o I could get stuck there for days! Chris.

Odds are if a game worked under Build 7000 it will work under Build 7100 though. However, I didn't notice the last edited date when I linked you to it. I just looked at the game list and it appeared to be fairly comprehensive. The author seems to have gotten tired of trying to keep up with it so I think you're right. Scratch it off as resource.

Chris just found this thread and people with Steam have some issues as well but they appear fixable. Other Steam owners say no problem at all. There was also mention of some Mass Effect BDts patch fixing the Steam Version though and running as Administrator was also recommended. So after reading through all 5 pages Steam looks like a pretty good way to go.

I assume you tried running setup as an Adminstrator for D2D ME.

Still downloading from Steam. Funny, it's a 10.xxGb download from them, only a 7.19 from D2D. But D2D was a zip file. Could also be the issue.

John, I never got the game to even start installing so running as Administrator wasn't an option.

Ahh, now Steam is updating ME, probably BDtS. Remember, I had to install BDtS before to fix the "missing Lava textures" on one of the planets. I have better hopes from Steam. We'll see if they let me down.

Oh, that's right, "Tachyon Fringe" didn't run on Win 7 but that's probably a Nova Logic issue rather than Steam. Chris.

I did as well Chris as you may recall, BDtS Fixed everything. Actually that was the one and ONLY issue the game ever had

was the Lava Textures, missing in that one are, other than that it ran flawlessly, and your correct i have the Retail Box version not Steam.

Furthermore I don't think theey give a rats A$$ anymore how many times I install it. That was upon initial release that all.

Like BioShock, now they don't vcare how many times it's installed, the whole idea with DRM was to stop pirates ASAP. When the games

were first re;eased. Today DRM is used less and less Russia and China sell pirated copies there before the game are in stores here.

So DRM is futile.

Final note:;

I am a member of both win7 and Vista forums, and your right Chris, a great place for info, but not much

fun to be a member, don't get me wrong they are both Excellent, I've know Shawn for some time. Brink.

Though anything you want to know it's actually easier to Google it and you'll end up in the right thread at one of those Forums.

They are UBER BUSY. UBER DUBER BUSY. If you post it will be buried with in minutes not hours nor days. EEK!!

I'm faithful to only this site.

It's kinda beyond me, why a game would run great on Vista and not on Win7, same Kernel. Win7=Vista SE.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I was referring to running the Installer itself or the Zip Extractor as Administrator if it was an EXE file. Either that or I'm missing something on how D2D games install. Doesn't really matter I guess.

Good luck with the Steam version, let us know how it goes. Hope it works out for you.

Yep HJ~

That's exactly what should be done. IMO. Or at least tried, as it is a great way to get around some issues that may occur.

Chris getting it off Steam will do the trick though I'm sure of it. ;)

GOOD LOOKING OUT!!
