Velvet Assassin is a WWII-themed stealth shooter, in which you must infiltrate German military camps for various missions.

Velvet Assassin
(Sure looks good in Leather, tight leather!!)

Image

Gameplay::

Players take control of Violette Summer, a beautiful but deadly spy deep behind enemy lines with no support or official backing from the British Government. Gameplay employs techniques similar to Ubisoft's Splinter Cell range of games. Players have to hide in the shadows in order to avoid being detected. Violette will have a purple aura surrounding her when she is completely invisible to the enemy. This aura will fade as she moves into light and hence visibility. If she is detected, she will either have to fight off the guard or escape. The game employs a special lifeline if detected called "Morphine Mode". If triggered, a cutscene will play out where the hospitalized Violette convulses and is administered a dose of morphine by a military nurse. Once returning to the game, the game world will temporarily freeze, giving the player the opportunity to execute any remaining enemies. Players will have limited use of the Morphine lifeline. Furthermore as the game progresses, players will be afforded the opportunity to select the type of upgrades they would like - depending on gameplay style.

Another Review::

Velvet Assassin

++++++++++++++

Loosely based on a true story/person this game is a story-driven stealth third person tactical shooter. Of all these just mentioned words, the stealth is the key to this game. The developer (Replay Studios) put lots of effort to make sure you have to use stealth in most of the game and only towards chapters' (12 chapters) ends provided enough ammo for you to engage in meaningful and actually survivable gunfights. Levels/chapters are rather linear but well done. The story is heavy and carries this game quite nicely, maybe because it's at least partially based on the real events during WW II and realistic settings (environment), and it makes you overlook some minor (and even major) negatives.

The good stuff:
- graphics/video: 8.5/10 - maybe even better; the game runs very smoothly on the highest settings (I ran it on a Phenom Quad with 8800GT) if you have a year or so old rig and the proprietary Replay engine does great job on lightning the scene. Shadows and dark areas being truly essential for a successful stealth piece, the engine renders them really nicely without much of a detail loss
- sound: 8.5/10 - superb voice/narration acting. Background music needs to be toned down a notch (which is available in the settings) so that enemy sounds (steps, etc) can be heard better
- story: 8.5/10 - I'd give it a 9 or 10 if not for a total disconnect between the morphine (bullet time) execution in undergarments and the rest of the story. I doubt there is any deeper and/or hidden meaning in doing bullet time in one's underwear ... most likely just an opportunity to do something different, maybe offer some eye candy (it's not disruptive or in bad taste, it just doesn't connect to the rest)
- stealth: 9/10 - a very strong effort to force the player into stealth gameplay. It's very well executed, but its value is more in the fact that we didn't have any meaningful stealth game in quite awhile
- atmosphere/intensity: 8.5/10 - there is a very dreadful and at the same time very intense feeling being a few feet away from the enemy that you are about to knife or be killed trying. Sudenly you are aware of every sound you make while sneaking and getting ready for a strike. When there are more than two or three enemies in the proximity and you have a knife and two bullets .... well, it can get almost hopeless
- gameplay: 8/10 - gameplay in itself (apart from the stealth component) is nothing unusually good or bad ... nothing you haven't seen before. Gun play is satisfying in terms of feel and weapons handling. Gameplay mechanics are somewhat unusual in a sense that the game is using *classic* non-strafe (A and D keys) third person perspective (meaning when you press D key, your game character turns right rather than side-stepping (or strafing) to the right. But when you use firearms (they can be used only in the aiming mode) then side-stepping takes over (is enabled) and you can't do much else (no run) in the aiming mode. It's an interesting concept but it takes a bit to adjust.

The not-so-good stuff:
- unusually strong console (xbox) feel right from the start. Mouse is not supported in game menus and setup settings - so you need to navigate menus with your keyboard.
- transition animations are stiff and disconnected (climbing the ladder, entering a new room)
- extremely weak frontal close combat ability -- once you are out of ammo (and morphine) and facing an enemy a few feet or less away from you , you can't do much but die in most situations. No attempt to develop a way to effectively attack an enemy (move his gun away from being pointed at you and strike with the knife). Knife strikes in the aim mode are too weak to inflict instant death or severe injury to the enemy. So the entire face-to-face close combat (except, of course, a sneak from the back) strategy is pretty much non-operational and you can't count on it
- firearms work/shoot only when using the aim mode -- there is no hip shots. Basically, if you are not aiming, the gun is holstered.
- movements are somewhat stiff or can rarely be described as smooth and natural
- no manual or quick save present, only arbitrary checkpoint-save system -- which means you may end up replaying some longer sections of the game

There are some things that are unexplainable which are a result of developer forcing stealth into the gameplay -- for example, enemy that was just pointing a gun at you is dead and his gun and ammo are gone ... meaning, you can't pick up his ammo or weapons. However, I'd consider this as a reasonable compromise between keeping the stealth component effectively in the game and not turning it into a gun-and-run episode.

Overall, I am biased in a positive way about this game ... meaning, I like it probably more than the game's technical and gameplay aspects would suggest. There is something very charming and inviting about this game. It could be that we didn't have any stealth games for awhile now that makes this game somewhat of a refreshing experience. The difficulty is about right, but some parts will be very frustrating to players who don't have much patience. It really takes patience, observation, planning and timely execution. In short, this will most likely be a sweet game for fans of stealth, while for others it may end up being a mixed bag or a flawed gem. People who are neither into third person shooters nor into stealth should probably skip this game. Overall score: 8.1/10.

Re: Velvet Assassin GameSpot Rated...

View the Video Review, or you can read it here::

7.5 Rated @ GameSpot, so I'd say it's more like an 8.0. :mrgreen:

Link:: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/sabot ... ot;thumb;2

I just watched it, it's the same as the Typed review but a Hella lot more fun to Watch!!

+++++++++++++++++++++

Here's a Gamer Review::

First off, I'm writing from the perspective of someone who's probably a bit older
than the average gemer here, my reflexes are a bit slow, not good at "twitch" reliant
gameplay and am not an expert on stealth games.

I was attracted to the game by the inspiration of the game, however loosely, on the
real life exploits of a female agent, which I do think it's cool.

I'm not finished the game but am far enough into it to weigh in, I feel.
There's already been plenty said from both players and critics so here's my own take
on some of the talked about aspects of the game (I'm playing at the higher difficulty
level, so this is reviewed from that setting):

-It has been criticized as being too linear and the AI too scripted. Both of which are
true, in fact it's linearity is my main complaint. Fortunately, there are secret objectives
that adds a bit of spice (and tension, since it may take you farther from a save point).
The AI are scripted but this is true for stealth games in general, or else they would
become hair-pulling exercises in frustration. HOWEVER; despite the scripted AI, it's
still flexible enough that I have found through repeated attempts at difficult areas
that different approaches are possible.

-Another criticism is that there is not enough ammo and you can't loot the soldiers
for weapons and ammo. At first I thought the same thing but after a few levels I
find that there's sufficient ammo even for me, who prefers the gun. This is a STEALTH
game, afterall, she's a spy and can't be going around blasting everyone with noisy machine
guns. The restriction on ammo realistically keeps it from becoming a shooter. There ARE
parts of the game that require firefights and so far I am satisefied with the way they've
been implemented.

-Viollette is limited in how she moves and where she can go; this is true but this is supposed
to be an ordinary woman forced to do extraordinary things in a pivotal point in our history.
It would not be realistic for her to be doing crazy acrobatics.

-Gamplay contrivances such as shooting oil puddles, electrifying water, pulling the grenade
pins from soldiers. Honestly, theses are harder to use than they sound; but other than pulling
a few grenade pins I have not used any of these, the game IS flexible enough that you can use
different methods. These are not always 100% effective either, so it does keep you on your toes.

-Morphine mode; I have to agree with most comments that this is a strange contrivance. HOWEVER;
I find that I rarely use it, it's much more fun doing it the old-fashioned way. I only use it rarely as a
desperate last resort, like taking out that last guard who sees me and i just missed my shot. So
while it may not be the best fitting element of the game it doesn't have to become a crutch.

So there you have it, my take on the game's talked-about issues. It does have a few problems
but overall it's fun and satisefying. The WW2 settings are quite realistic. The graphics are not
top-notch but certainly good enough for a game played in the dark, and you rarely get close
enough to see the soldiers' faces in detail anyway. The wide variety of kill animations are
blood-curdling! They really make you realize just how nasty a business this simple woman is
doing. It may be very loosely based on her real history but the game works well in taking you there.

++++++++++++++++++++

If you'd rather read a regular gamers opinion. This guy is older PC gamer too, so I can relate better. :D

++++++++++++++++++++

So there it is there, I'll get it, though I'm in no Hurry.... ;) Though, IMHO, it sounds GREAT!! :clapping:

just picked it up @ GoGamer last week, 6 bucks!! 48 hour Madness sale :D

I got a Perfect Stealth kill Score on my first Mission, then I starting shooting them when I had too, or just

got tired of the whole Stealth thing, No Biggy though, I still do well, I miss a collectible here and there but hell I'd be

at it all day if I tried to find them all, and man they Hide them well. The GFX are Stunning IMHO, Love it's Music too, and atmosphere

is excellent, wish the save system was better, more Check points, if it had quick save I'd find them all for sure!!

It's just right as far as being difficult, not easy, I have to replay check points all the time. Takes me forever sometimes.

I like the way the Germans speak German and it's all in Subtitles too. Makes it more realistic I think. Very nice game, you

don't have to be totally stealthy, which is nice, I just got my second uniform. Man Violet is fine to, tad of a Heroin Habit but hay

realism!! Morpheme was a plenty during the time period. Also Nazi Meth. I think it deserves the 8.0 GS gave it!! This game is a

sleeper hit. Not many will play it, sometimes those are the BEST games out there.... ;)

You'll need to reassign your keys like I did, the default K&M kinda bites, but is easily fixed!!

Velvet Assassin is a good solid game. Period. It makes you think and your timing is very critical, just read about it in a Guide, first to learn how to play it right.

I tend to use my Silenenced lugar way to much, have to do much more stealth kills, you just hide in the dark, wait for a Nazi to walk past, then you stab him, um limited

usage of your knife. Bullets are hard to come by, but in certain areas you'll get a gang of weapons to kill the Butcher, for example. The check points though I hate any check point system,

are pretty close together, which makes it cool. I adore the Morpheme Mode she has, it's way trippy!! Never seen anything like it, the fact that few showed interest in VA, amazes me.

There are 1,000's of games for 40-50 bucks, that don't hold a Candle to Velvet Assassin Really!! :9:

Image

Really Really well made Game, that makes you Think.... :read: Another thing I really like is the very simple controls, and the almost absent HUD!!

===========================

BTW, do to personal financial difficulties, I'm finding another place to live and we not be around for some time, I'll miss all you GUYS!!

===========================

It's a long story, I'm not going to get into. Lost my rommate etc, can't pay the rent and so on. I care about everyone here. Remember that.... :!:

In time I'll be Back!!
