Vista and older games..........

Postby Mr. Chris » Sun Feb 15, 2009 8:53 pm

really really really works sweet. I recently found a guy in Utah that has probably every old game you can think of, and I found 3 classics I really needed. No, really. I did. Really.

This one I never could get to work right even back in Win 98/ ME days: (only pic I could find was the Sega box, but it's for Windows)
Image

Can't find images for the other 2, "Devastation" and "Star Wars: Rebel Assault" But, the really kewl thing is, they all run fine in Vista!

I wonder, tho, like setting the graphics in "Bang....", how the hell does a game that old know what video card I now have? :o (kinda like how does the lady at the Chinese takeout know my name when I never told her? )

Now that I'm in Gaming Overload Mode, I better stock up on Red Bulls. :P Sleep? What's that? Chris.

Oh, yes, I played Devastation several times thru, even tho it was the buggiest game at the time. Constantly crashes. But it also saves the game as it crashes? Go figure. Like the Dev Team knew it was bugged as hell. Still it's a fun shooter, about half way thru, your team finds and fixes a respawning device like the enemy has and now you are immortal. The levels are cool, 20 of them, some here and some in a foreign country.

You get a ton of different weapons, and you change your load out before you respawn. I liked the laser gun, it fries you like a crispy critter, turns whoever you shoot into a silouette of ashes. I'm actually surprised that GS gave it 6.3. I would have given it less, just because of the constant crashes. Chris.

Did their review mention constant crashes? If not, Id compare my machine to their machine to see what was different. Normally Id start with removal of the Sound Device.

If anyone has it, load up Ultima 9 on VISTA without the patch and see what it does.

Yes, the review did point that out. And granted, my PC at the time wasn't the most expensive rig, but a P4 900-something and an ATI 9088 Pro and 1Gb of RAM, it should have played that game easily. Chris.

What I remember most about Devastation (when playing an an 800MHz Thunderbird with 256MB RAM and an GF2 MX 400) was the incredible loading times. It was like waiting for Far Cry to load 3 times over. I was always happy to get to the part of the game with the regen device so that when I died I didn't have to reload. The game performed so bad it's not funny.

Well, it worked for about 20 minutes then crashed. Now it won't even load. Tried all the different compatability modes. Meh, no biggie. When it did run it was really a fun game. Maybe there's something else I have to disable in the compatability section.

Won't even start under W98/ ME, starts but crashes under W2K and XP and Vista.

At least Bang! runs great using W98 mode. Now let's see how long Star Wars will last. Chris.

Funny, this is the error report I get: notice the CPU speed!

LOL wish I could clock this rig that high! Maybe it's a dual core thing and I need to lock the game to one core.

But then why did it work for a while then belly up? :? Pissing me off. Chris.

Chris~

Try messing around with all the advanced settings, try this one here (WAW is not set like this, just an Example).

Image

Also older games use 16bit Color, so change your Desktop REZ to 16bit Color. Plus Older games sometimes won't run at all with new drivers,

so you may have to use drivers from around the time the game was released. ;)
