It really depends on the make and model of the laptop. If it's a more expensive one, a lot of times you can upgrade the graphic card. But, a lower end model, the graphic chip is soldered right onto the motherboard, so it can't be upgraded.
One easy thing you may be able to do is to increase the amount of system RAM, and then allocate more of that RAM to the onboard graphics. You will need to look around in the BIOS settings to see if it's possible to allocate more RAM to the graphics.
